Douglas was a navy doctor and an instructor for the Uniformed Services Medical College. He is now a reserve lieutenant commander.

Douglas graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He completed his residency in pediatrics at Oakland Naval Hospital. He has Board Certification from the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatric Gastroenterology. His professional interests include inflammatory bowel disease, endoscopic procedures, hepatitis C, and hereditary polyposis disorders.

Doughlas and his son participated in a 5k race in Maryland on 24-Aug-1996. He now lives and practices pediatric gastroenterology medicine in Greenville, SC.

Douglas and Barbara's children are:
1. Douglas Edmond Jr. (14-Dec-1988) and
2. Benjamin Thomas (24-Jan-1996).
