Nell was a member of the Whiteville [NC] High School state
championship basketball team. She was a member of the Loris
Town Hall Restoration Committe and the Loris First United
Methodist Church. Nell and husband, Thomas Stanley, were
honored with the 1977 Citizens of the Year Award.
Nell and her family lived in Loris, SC. She was very
close to her sister Kate who lived in Whiteville, NC.
Nell was very astute businesswoman and interested in
finance and investments. She reportedly demanded a
bedside telephone and the Wall Street Journal while
hospitalized at Intergrated Health Services famility
in Charlotte, NC.
Tom, age 80, died in Charlotte, NC. He was born in Loris. Tom was president of Hardwick Fertilizer Company and Hardwick Insurance Agency in Loris. In 1998, he and Nell, were the Loris Citizens of the Year and the previous year, they were the Grand Marshals for the Loris Christmas Parade. Having served as scoutmaster for 33 years, one of his proudest achievements was receipt of scouting's prestigious award, the "Silver Beaver Award". Under his guidance, twenty-four Loris scouts became Eagle Scouts. He served as chairman of the Horry County Marketing Commission, was a member of the Board of Directors of Loris Industrial Developers, Past President of the Loris Lions Club, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Loris Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of Board of Trustees of Loris Methodist Church, and was a Sunday School teacher. The Methodist Church awarded him the "Flaming Cross" award. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Loris Masonic Lodge.
In 1937, he graduated from Tabor City High School, where he served as Senior Class President. In 1942, he volunteered for the United States Navy. Stationed in the Pacific theater, he was an Aviation Machinist First Class aind Aviation Cadet in flight training.
Nell was the owner and operator of Hardwick Fertilizer
Company in Loris.
Nathan and Nell's children are:
(1) Danya Webb (1939? to 26-Dec-2006. Danya married James Homer Withheld, Jr.
They adopted Thomas and Jim. Danya was a graduate of the College of William and Mary (BS) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (MBA). She was a certified public accountant (CPA), active in politics, and served as president of the N.C. Women's Political Caucus.
(2)Nathan III married Linda Ann Withheld.
(3) Susan married Francis Burt Withheld, III.
After Nathan Hardick's death and that of his mother,
Nathan's father, Daniel Webster Hardwick lived with
Nell and Tom Stanley until his death.
