STRATHFIELD

Strathfield is situated in the central part of Metropolitan Sydney. Chinese is the first major ethnic language group (13.9 %), followed by Korean (9.58 %). There I found a lot of shops displaying the Korean language. The following table and graph compare the population of the five major ethnic languages spoken at home with those speaking only English.

The findings:
I surveyed the main street south of the railway station, which was the busiest part of Strathfield. There was a large concentration of shops displaying Korean (54 %), despite the fact that there were more Chinese living in this suburb. There were also a few shops with both Korean and Chinese. I noticed that the banks put up Korean versions of their posters in their front windows. This could indicate a very high concentration of Koreans in the local area or a lower competence in English. Some signs displayed only Korean with no English. This is very uncommon in other suburbs.

North of the railway station was much more quieter and had less shops. Most of these only used English, but there was a pub which also displayed Korean. This is again very unusual in other suburbs.
