Elder Gods
or The True Story of Jack and Jill
Original tune
I'm lying in the shadows
At the bottom of the hill
Watching all the magic go awry
My lover's ringed by fire
In the circle of protection,
And bolts of dust are falling from the sky.
Then down falls my lover,
Wheezing and a-screaming,
And balls of light are falling from the sky.
I catch her and I hold her,
And she cuffs my bleeding forehead
And the stones on the hillside learn to fly.
We set a burning fire,
And then we blessed the hillside,
We drew the sacred water from the well.
But I guess I said the wrong things,
For when we poured out the water,
It opened up a portal straight to hell.
Now my lover she lies helpless,
What with burning and with bleeding,
Our blood soaks swiftly, wetly in the earth.
I guess it's what we wanted,
And some day they'll sing a story,
Of how two lovers failed to save the earth.
