Closer to Zen

After Closer to Fine by The Indigo Girls

with slightly alterned chords

I'm trying to tell you something 'bout our lives,
To show you why we're always intertwined,
And the hardest thing I ever had to do,
Was to let you walk away from me on Mu,
And when we saw Atlantis fall.

Well our souls have a bond that's unbreakable,
But we've screwed it up for several thousand years,
Every time we get together there's disaster.
And every life the cycle just turns faster,
But still we fall in love again.

We were burned once as Trojans,
And poisoned as Romans,
It would have worked in Egypt,
Except for those omens . . .

We spend the better part of our existence,
Waiting for the axe to fall,
And each time through I wonder,
If we really understand it all.

When the English took you off to fight their war,
You know I mourned you like a thousand times before,
But my tears couldn't stop the shells from falling,
When you died, I felt your soul calling,
And so we go around once more.

We were starving as pilgrims,
We drowned on Titanic,
In 1812 your ship went down,
Somewhere in the Atlantic.

I spend the better part of my existence,
Waiting for the axe to fall,
And each time through I wonder,
If we really understand it all.

And now I have found you once again,
We live on a space-ship colony,
In the year of 2010,
We're fighting for survival,
With the stars as our reward,
And it was all so perfect,
'til we started to get bored.
Are we going to go around again?

We're constantly striving,
To reach one another,
And though it never works out,
I guess we will discover,
There's more than one question
For the answer
That this love is forevermore.

And though we'll never make it
Through this lifetime,
At least this time we know the score.

For all that we've been through,
We're finally seeing,
The endless progression,
That keeps us from being,
There's always a time of perfect happiness,
Right before the axe will fall,
And this time I'm quite sure,
That I don't understand at all.
