Hong Kong Girl Guides

The Hong Kong Girl Guides Association is a full WAGGGS member of the Asia Pacific Region. Guiding in Hong Kong started in 1916, and we've got over 38000 members in 1999. The Guide Company that I belonged to, the 5th Island Company, was founded on April 5, 1951.

The HKGGA Logo

HKGGA Logo (colour)The HKGGA logo is based on the trefoil. The two segments on the top, the two segments on the left, and the two segments on the right forms the three leaves.

The notched edge of the logo recalls the shape of the leaves of the Bauhinia blakenaa.

The center of the symbol is a stylised version of the Chinese character "KWONG" meaning "a ray of light" or "guiding beacon". This is thought to be very appropriate to the spirit of Guiding.

When used in colour, the mauve(purple) colour reflects the colour of the Bauhinia blossom, and the red colour is used because it is considered particularly auspicious by the Chinese. This is an intergration of the Chinese traditions.

The same symbol is used for all age levels.

The Different Age Levels

Happy Bee: Kindergarten (for both boys and girls)
Brownies: 6-12 (Grades 1-7)
Girl Guides: 10-18 (Grades 5-13)
Rangers: 15-21 (Grades 11- University)
Guider: 18+
Golden Guides: 60+ (for the elderly women)

You can see that actually there is a little overlapping. For example, if I am 16 I can become a Ranger if I want to, but since I chose to remain in the Guides, I can stay until 18, then decide whether I'll be a Ranger or a Guider.

The Promise and Law for Guides (English)

Note that both Chinese and English versions of the promise are used in Hong Kong, because of the mix of nationalities and the preference of certain schools.

Promise

I promise to do my best,
To be true to myself, to my God/my faith,
and my country/and the country in which I live,
To help others, and
To keep the Guiding Law.

*where there are two options in the Promise, we can choose one according to our wish.

Guide Law

As a Guide,

  1. I will be reliable, honest, and trustworthy.
  2. I will use my resources wisely and help others.
  3. I will be true to myself and respect the opinion of others.
  4. I will face challenges and learn from my experiences.
  5. I will care for nature and all living things.
  6. I will be friendly and a sister to all Guides.

Motto
