John K. Winiger: Implementation of an upgraded server for Saint Luke’s Parish

Week [1]: 11/13/2005

Tasks

1) Survey Users for IDs, shares and accessed data. [Completed]

Major accomplishments associated with this task are:

The users did not actually get surveyed. The information was able to be gathered from the key stakeholders and after analysis has been submitted to the key stakeholders for approval.

2) Identify old unneeded data and applications. [Completed]

Major accomplishments associated with this task are:

This task was handled in a reverse mindset. Rather then identifying unneeded data and applications I identified what data and applications where needed. This left everything else as unneeded. This approach was taking because it appeared that the amount of unneeded material out weight the needed material making this the more streamlined approach.

3) Identify any additional services and software to be utilized. [Completed]

Major accomplishments associated with this task are:

Additional services to be utilized include: DNS, DHCP, WINS, and Windows Shadow Copy. At the present time DNS and DHCP is being handled by a Netgear routes. By allowing the Windows 2003 server to handle DNS and DHCP you have more options available to configure in DHCP and you can allow DHCP to automatically register clients into DNS. This allows for a more dynamic and stable environment. Adding WINS to the Windows 2003 server will help with browsing issue with old OSes, such as Windows 98. Windows Shadow Copy has two major benefits; first it removes the need for an open file agent when performing backups. Second, it retains copies of files that have been changed or deleted so clients may go back to a previous version.

Additional software to be utilized include: Backup Exec. The church currently has workstation based backup software in place that can not perform a complete and structured backup of a server. By switching to server based backup software this issue will be resolved. The full version of backup exec is being selected over the stripped down version that comes with Windows 2003 because it does not allow for the structure and backup media that is required.

Decisions

What came up that needed to be addressed?

The church decided to test a cable modem to compare its speed against their current DSL connection. They were unaware of the fully impact that this would cause on this project. Switching connections changed the IP address used to remotely connect to the church. The router was also changed which resulted in the loss of port forwarding setting that had been made to he old router to properly allow the remote connection to the server.

How did you solve it?

Several e-mails where exchanged in which the problem was determined. After the new IP address was provided and access was still not possible further investigation was performed which lead to the discovery that the router had been replaced. I was able to walk Janet through the configuration needed to allow remote access. The project was then able to continue.

What important decisions did you make this week that impacted your project?

This incident made it clear that I needed to facilitate better communication between the church and myself.

Learning

1) What helpful feedback did you get in the class (instructor, classmates) and outside the class (user, stakeholder, beneficiary, mentor, expert advisor, others)? What did you gain from this feedback?

Since this week was used for analysis there was no feedback. In this phase I was looked to for feedback based on my analysis. Having submitted my findings there should be considerable feedback next week.

2) What resources did you use this week (e.g., people, money, equipment, systems, or software)? Did you add new resources? What was your learning?

The resources that where utilized this week were; myself, the old server, and the key stakeholders. Moving forward it is believe that a few more resources may be added but this is still being considered.

3) What research did you perform this week that was assisting and/or literature based? What was your learning?

How could I have avoided what happened in regards to the internet connection being changed and the project being delayed?

This could have been accomplished through better project communication. Information on how to better communicate within a project has been found in the Project Communication Handbook. By identifying what information is needed by who and when, and then planning for its delivery, this problem can be avoided.

Indicators

1) How well did you stick to your project schedule?

There where some delays in the items that where scheduled, which shifted the work load from being evenly displaced over the week to a large amount at the end of the week. The overall goals have been completed, so we are on schedule.

2) How prepared are you to conclude your project in Unit 10 as required in this course?

Projections based on this week's performance support that proper preparation was taken and the project should conclude on schedule in Unit 10.

3) How likely is it that you will need to resort to your contingency plan?

At this point in time it would appear that the contingency plan will not be resorted to and the project will complete successfully.
