John K. Winiger: Implementation of an upgraded server for Saint Luke’s Parish

Week [3]: Hardware Phase 11/27/2005

Tasks

1) Select components to be used to build new server. [Completed]

Major accomplishments associated with this task are:

Determined what type of server would best suite the needs of the church and used this information as a guideline for part selection. In order to maintain a level of high availability a mirrored RAID set was chosen to prevent immediate failures. An external hard drive was selected to perform point in time or daily backups in order to protect against files corruption. Dual DVD burners were selected to provide a monthly backup which could be shipped to a safe location to protect again disasters.

2) Order Components. [Completed]

Major accomplishments associated with this task are:

The order for the parts was placed but due to a payment verification issue the parts were never shipped. This was discovered On Wednesday when the parts were to be picked up. After calling the company there was no way to resolve the issue due to the Thanksgiving holiday. The parts are scheduled to be delivered Monday.

3) Build new server from parts. [Delayed]

Major accomplishments associated with this task are:

Since the server parts were delayed and are not available the building of the server is delayed until next week. This work will be added to the work of that phase. The increased work load will add a little difficulty but should be handled and return us to our panned schedule.

Decisions

What came up that needed to be addressed?

The parts that were ordered to build the new server were not shipped by the vendor due to a credit card verification issue. This prevented the completion of one of the tasks of this phase.

How did you solve it?

We contacted the vendor and corrected the information needed for verification and got the parts shipped.

What important decisions did you make this week that impacted your project?

The decision was made to add the delayed task from this week to the tasks of next week. This will increase the workload but it is the only option to keep the project from failing.

Learning

1) What helpful feedback did you get in the class (instructor, classmates) and outside the class (user, stakeholder, beneficiary, mentor, expert advisor, others)? What did you gain from this feedback?

The only real feed back that was offered this week was that the server parts should have been ordered sooner. Unfortunately doing so would be outside the schedule that was created. If there was not a holiday then there would not have been a problem.

2) What resources did you use this week (e.g., people, money, equipment, systems, or software)?

The resources that where utilized this week were; myself, the internet, and the key stakeholders.

3) What research did you perform this week that was assisting and/or literature based? What was your learning?

What would be the best parts to choose in order to build the church's new server?

The selected vender allows people to write reviews of products. By looking into what others thought of products it allowed me to make a better selection and come out with a better systems with pars that other approve of.

Indicators

1) How well did you stick to your project schedule?

Due to a shipping issue the last task of this phase had to be delayed. The first two tasks however were completed as scheduled. Considering that the majority of the tasks were on target I would say the schedule has been adhered to.

2) How prepared are you to conclude your project in Unit 10 as required in this course?

Although there was a delay in the project this week the project should conclude in Unit 10 as required.

3) How likely is it that you will need to resort to your contingency plan?
At this point in time it would appear that the contingency plan will not be resorted to and the project will complete successfully.
