John K. Winiger: Implementation of an upgraded server for Saint Luke’s Parish |
|
Week [4]: Software Phase 12/04/2005 |
|
Tasks |
1) Install Windows 2003 Server and related software. [Completed]
Major accomplishments associated with this task are: The installation of the server software went perfectly. The server was setup with 3 partitions. The first partition is for the OS, the second is for DATA, and the third is for shadow copy use.
2) Configure. [Completed]
Major accomplishments associated with this task are: The server was joined into the pre-existing domain and promoted to a domain controller. DNS, DHCP, and WINS were configured to match the old server.
3) Install ACS software. [Completed]
Major accomplishments associated with this task are: Since ACS is an unknown software research had to be done in order to find out how to install the software. In time this required calling ACS directly which resulted in finding out that the ACS folder just needed to be copied to the new server and the shares redirected. This would be covered in the migration phase. |
Decisions |
What came up that needed to be addressed? The problem that some of the workstations are not joined into the domain is an issue that came up again. What is the best way to resolve the issues?
How did you solve it? Since there seemed to be an ongoing problem with covering users to roaming profiles a consideration was made to convert them to local profiles instead.
What important decisions did you make this week that impacted your project? The decision was made that another attempt will be made but this issue may be left to the church's computer person since this is outside the scope of the original project. |
Learning |
1) What helpful feedback did you get in the class (instructor, classmates) and outside the class (user, stakeholder, beneficiary, mentor, expert advisor, others)? What did you gain from this feedback?
Janet recommended contacting ACS directly in order to help figure out how to transfer the ACS software to the new server. This turned out to be very beneficial since I found out that the folder simply needed to be moved to the new server and the shared redirected. This was a GREAT discovery!
2) What resources did you use this week (e.g., people, money, equipment, systems, or software)? Did you add new resources? What was your learning?
The resources that where utilized this week were; myself, the internet, ACS, and the key stakeholders.
3) What research did you perform this week that was assisting and/or literature based? What was your learning?
How do you install and move ACS software from one server to another?
In an attempt to answer this question I went to the ACS web site. This was of little help since a site number and pin were required to gain access to the support section. This led me back to Janet at the church for further assistance. She supplied me with the needed information and a direct pone number to ACS. Contacting ACS provided a wealth of information and resolved the issue.

Indicators |
1) How well did you stick to your project schedule? Although there was added work from the previous phase I as able to stick to the projected schedule as indicated.
2) How prepared are you to conclude your project in Unit 10 as required in this course? Based on the fact that I am on schedule as planned I am very confident that the project will conclude in Unit 10 as planned.
3) How likely is it that you will need to resort to your contingency plan? Last week there was a possibility of resulting to a contingency plan but since everything has been caught up on resulting to the contingency plan is not likely.
