John K. Winiger: Implementation of an upgraded server for Saint Luke’s Parish

Week [5]: Migration Phase 12/11/2005

Tasks

1) Migrate Data from old server to new. [Delayed]

Major accomplishments associated with this task are:

An issue of having the workstations properly joined into the domain has cause the migration to the new server to be delayed. By address this issue and getting all workstations properly joined into the domain the migration to the new server will be much more seamless to the users and create a more manageable environment. Since the end result will be more beneficial this delay is deemed to be well worth it.

2) Remove old server from Domain. [Delayed]

Major accomplishments associated with this task are:

Since the migration to he new server is delayed the removal of the old server from the domain must also be delayed. It has been discussed and the old server will be removed from the domain, completely rebuilt, and then rejoined into the domain in order to provide a functional spare in case of emergency.

3) Seek feedback from the Stakeholder. [Completed]

Major accomplishments associated with this task are:

The stakeholder had concerns about the project not completing on the planned date. He was happy with the overall work that had been completed so far but did not want to be left with an uncompleted project. By identifying items that need to be addressed that were outside the scope of the project that would delay the project but produce a better end result his concerns were put to rest. He agreed that the benefits from the delay were worth it.

Decisions

What came up that needed to be addressed?

There are other areas of the church's computer environment that interconnect with the server which are outside the scope of this project. Completing the project on the planned schedule would result in rework to address these items later.

How did you solve it?

Address the other areas first so rework will not be required.

What important decisions did you make this week that impacted your project?

The decision was made to delay portions of the last phase of the project so that other areas of the computer environment which interact with the server can be addressed first so rework will not be needed later.

Learning

1) What helpful feedback did you get in the class (instructor, classmates) and outside the class (user, stakeholder, beneficiary, mentor, expert advisor, others)? What did you gain from this feedback?

The stakeholder voiced concerns that the project was not going to be fully completed on the scheduled date, this lead back to an issue of communication. There were items that were being planned that were not par of this project but were planned on being performed. Differentiating between what was part of this project and what was happening outside the scope of this project should have been more clearly defined.

2) What resources did you use this week (e.g., people, money, equipment, systems, or software)? Did you add new resources? What was your learning?

The resources that where utilized this week were; myself, the internet, the old server, the new server and the key stakeholders.

3) What research did you perform this week that was assisting and/or literature based? What was your learning?

What is the best was to migrate users onto the domain?

This guide covers all the aspects of using the Microsoft Files and Setting Wizard in order to migrate user information from one machine to another or to a different profile on the same machine. This will be the bases for the solution to the problems found when trying to migrate users onto the domain at the church.

Indicators

1) How well did you stick to your project schedule?

Because of issues out side the scope of this project some of this weeks scheduled tasks are being delayed. I find it to be more important to extend the scheduled timeline to ensure the highest level of quality opposed to meeting a deadline which can be extended. Any job worth doing is worth doing right!

2) How prepared are you to conclude your project in Unit 10 as required in this course?

I am prepared to conclude my project in Unit 10 as required in the course but am choosing not to. By doing so will allow other issues to be addressed that will greatly improve the last section of this project.

3) How likely is it that you will need to resort to your contingency plan?

The contingency plan is not needed. The project did meet with a shipping delay be was resolved. I am completely confident that this project will go beyond the scope in order to create an even better environment then planned.
