Track
and Field
The Field: Home of Wildcat football. The
field has altered it's appearance many times throughout the years to accommodate
the changing classification of Winside, but remains a tough place to play
never-the-less. Seen by many as the one of the best football fields in
Northeast Nebraska. This gridiron has seen numerous successful 'cat squads
throughout the years, including conference titles, All-State stars, and
highlighted by the State quarterfinal qualifying team of 1997.
The Track: Primarily used for track and
field practices. The surface is still dirt, but remains a satisfactory
location to practice sprints, distance running, and hand offs. The infield
serves as hurdle and sprint specific training area, as well as providing
space for the discus. Along the track are the long jump/triple jump pits,
and also the shot put pit. The Track has also seen it's share of champions;
from the individual champions such as Jenny Jacobsen, Melinda Mohr, and
Landon Grothe, to the girl's class D team champions in 1992.
Gymnasium
Built along with the High School building, the
gymnasium houses three of Winside's sporting events. It holds a official
capacity of 800 with bleachers on the North and South sides of the gym.
Recent upgrades have been completed to increase fan accommodations, as
well as increase athlete safety, Some of these include installation of
a new second score board on the west wall, wall padding along the entire
baselines, and resurfacing and repainting of the playing floor.
Most notably of the three is the Wildcat Wrestling
squad who have accumulated an astounding thirteen 'Top 3' finishes at the
state wrestling meet, including two state team titles, six runner-up trophies,
and twenty-nine individual champions. Also, the gym has served as the host
to many district wrestling tournaments.
Included in this winning tradition is volleyball,
where there has been plenty of success. The Winside volleyball program
has garnered numerous conference titles, All-State award recipients, and
dominate performances. Reaching a high in the late 80's, early 90's, the
Wildcats won 4 straight district crowns, to qualify for the state tournament
in Lincoln.
Lastly is basketball where success has never
come easy to a 'wrestling town'. The girl's squad has never been held winless
in every year it has fielded a team. It has seen many ups and downs, but
manages to stay competitive year after year. On the boy's side, success
has come a bit more frequent. They have also never been held winless, and
have been a tough competitor in recent years. Scoring a 47-70 record in
the past six years compared to a 19-89 record the six years prior. This
recent success is tied to two conference runner-up trophies (1989, 1999).
It was the 1999 season that highlighted a peak in the program, and got
the gym rockin'. A near capacity crowd witnessed the Clark division final
where the 'cats defeated Osmond, 49-48 in a last second thriller to earn
a spot in the conference final match-up with undefeated Ponca. This team
also finished with a 11-0 home record, state-wide recognition with a 10th
place class C2 rating for two weeks by the Omaha World Herald, and the
conference runner-up trophy.
Weight
room
Any good athletic program starts with the weight room, and the 'Power
Pit' helps facilitate just that. The 600 square foot weight room features
3 benches, 3 inclined benches, 2 squat racks, a hip sled, 2 clean, and
dead-lift pits, quads and hamstring station, and lat machines. Summer weight
training is offered at two times, early morning and early evening where
athletics or students participate in a rigorous program. Also, time during
school hours is offered for students to maintain their progress from the
summer.
Multi-purpose
room
Exactly as the name suggests, this area of the school is used for almost
everything. From PE classes, to concerts, to athletic practices. The main
sport that utilizes this area is the wrestling team. The facility is able
to accommodate adequate room for the entire squad. This facility has been
the practice area for 29 state wrestling champions and one Nebraska State
Hall-of-Fame wrestling coach throughout the years.
The
Dakota Dome
The Winside Wildcats from time to time will play the final game on
its football schedule in the Dakota Dome in Vermillion, SD. This $7.9 million
facility built in 1979 gives high school teams that big game atmosphere
and an experience that most teams never get. Also, the Dan Lennon Track
Invotational is held in the dome during the early part of the season where
Winside will compete against some of the best athletes from South Dakota,
Iowa, and Nebraska. |
