A poem from:

A Cold Road Calling

by D. Winter

Elegy for Jesse Gelsinger

Immortal youth now laid to ever rest,
flesh now ash and scattered on the wind.
He gave his mortal flame as he thought best;
his gift to science, too late now to rescind.
This youth, unknown to Fortune it is true;
yet Melancholy holds no stake or claim
upon his head; for it is ours to rue
his mournful passing, courageous flame.
To Fame now goes this garland for a crown;
this laurel, the name of Jesse Gelsinger.
He's earned from us our sorrow and renown.
Upon our hearts his name must ever linger.
He was a victim of our science rushing;
the first to die: genetic engineering.
