Winterreise
Interpretations across two centuries of A Winter's Journey

    What is it?

Winterreise consists of a book bound in two sections, plus a companion CD. The CD contains a recording of the complete set of twenty-four songs from Franz Schubert's Die Winterreise song-cycle, sung by bass Robert Lloyd, accompanied by pianist Julius Drake.

Companion CD

The first section of the book, a total of 60 pages, contains twenty-three colour reproductions of paintings by artist Pip Wolf, each inspired by a live performance of the Die Winterreise song-cycle by Robert Lloyd and Julius Drake. Also included are  translations of the poems by Wilhelm Muller that provide the lyrics for Franz Schubert's Die Winterreise song-cycle. Each painting is set on a left-hand page, with the translated poem/song that inspired it on the facing page. Black-and-white sketches, made by Pip Woolf as she listened to the performance, are reproduced on the poem pages.

The second section of the book, a total of 80 pages, contains a facsimile of the music score for all twenty-four songs in the Die Winterreise song-cycle that was used by Robert Lloyd for his performance and recording.
