Backpacking in Australia

Australia Map

I backpacked in Australia from 1 August 1995 to 30 September 1995. It was a 2 months trip. I actually planned a one month trip but later I extended my trip to 2 months as I get to know more about Australia.

I started in Cairns. Here I spend 1 week scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea. It is a live-on-board scuba diving trip. We spend all our time out in the sea. The main event is the potate-cod and the shark-feed. In the potate-cod dive, we got to see the potatoe-cod. I tell you, these potate cod are hugh. They are about 80cm long and 30 cm in diameter. The most exciting dive is the shark-feed. Imagine being surrounded by more than 20 silver-tipped and white-tipped sharks and you are not even protected in a cage! They are about 1.5 metres long. I always wondered, what happens if one of these sharks decide to eat us.

After the week in Cairns, I headed down to Townsville. At Townsville, I tried Whitewater Rafting in Tully.

I continued southward to Sunshine Coast, then Brisbane and Gold Coast. In Gold Coast, I experienced the ultimate adeeline, the Bungy Jump. I also went to Dreamworld, Movieworld and Sea World

Then I went further down to Sydney, Canberra, Snowy Mountains, Melborne, and Adelaide. I joined a 3 days trip with the Wayward Bus touring company which begins the trip from Melborne to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road.

In between, we went to a golf-course with hundreds of kangaroos in it. We also went 'wild koala hunting'. See the Blue Lake which turns blue every spring, etc....

From Adelaide, I went north to Coober Pedy, one of the places where Opals are mined. Coober Pedy means 'white men live underground'. It's true, people other than the aborginals live underground due to the hot weather.

From Coober Pedy, I headed further north to the red center, the Ayer Rock. I climbed all the way up to the summit. The scenery is just splendid!

From Ayer Rock, I went to Alice Springs, and from here take a fight to Perth, Western Australia. Visited the Pinnacles and then the Wave Rock.
