Public Information Announcement

There are several reasons why domain names are a First Amendment issue.

1. Most obviously, by using domains as trademarks, the authorities totally disrespect your rights to use these words.

Not only that - they use lies, spin and propaganda to deceive you in this.

They are using Domain Name System as a fatally flawed trademark system - yet know how to make it compatible.

It is fatally flawed as only one business may use this name, out of untold numbers world-wide with the same trademark.

When solution is easier than using the phone, it can only be because they wish to abridge your rights to free speech.

No words should be sacrosanct - we should be allowed to use them for any purpose we wish (within libel and incitement law).

2. Holding up new TLDs they stop those words also being used by others, further restricting your freedom of speech.

Millions of TLDs are being sat on by ICANN. They are the worlds greatest 'cybersquatters' (to use their definition of word).

Analogy - What sort of world would it be if we only had two hundred or so towns - each allowed only one High Street (Americans may call it Main Street)?

3. Then there is the power of the message - they wish to restrict the force of your voice.

e.g. The direct address for this site was - freespace.virgin.net/garry.anderson/wipo/

So then - a) Which of these gets the message across better:

WIPO.org.uk.......................OR.......................freespace.virgin.net/garry.anderson/WIPO/ ?

b) Which are you most likely to find? and c) Which more likely to remember in a weeks time?

They do all this to help Corporations illegally abuse their trademarks - to gain more power.

Governments wish to abuse your rights also:

If you decided to write a book, entitled, 'Barcelona' - does that book belong to the Barcelona town council?

They took Barcelona.com from the legal owners.

The DNS is comparable to a world library book index system.

The tattered and well used book "WIPO.org", an idiots guide on how to steal domains, is at 193.5.93.80, so can be found in library number 193, aisle 5, shelf 93 and is the 80th book along.

First Amendment states the freedom of speech must not be abridged - shortened.

Virtually every word is trademarked. Does it not muffle your voice, being denied from using the words you need?

To those that say it is not a First Amendment issue and the authorities that do nothing about it - that why I adopt this attitude with you.

This is why you divert attention away from yourselves, calling innocent people crooks (cybersquatters) to steal their property.

It is you that are the crooks and violators of peoples rights.

Without looking back up a few lines, what is the direct address for this site (with all correct punctuation)?

See - you forgot already.

Trademarks are so you can identify owner from it - not to dominate a words usage - or any other feeble excuse they can make up.

Words taken by WIPO include: video net, roller blade, best locks, nitro fuel, tonsil, north face, marketing mix, 0xygen, edentist, state-farm, new-gig, video direct, iphones, open mail, traditions, open view, unicode, southern company, pc gateway, ultra pure water, time keeper, click here, current, beauty co, sound-choice, e-auto-parts, eresolution, body and soul, talk about, esquire, office specialists, crew, praline, the total package, faith net, buy PC, home interiors, big dog, euro consult, music web, RANT...etc.

This is the tip of the iceburg - most do not get this far. This is just one 'so-called' arbiter.

By the time you read this more words will have disappeared from our vocabulary, even more will go tomorrow.

Indeed, the arbitrators boast about the number of domains they have taken from the Lawful Owners.

Secretary Evans, U.S. Department of Commerce, is now responsible for this matter.
