Second Grade News

Learning certainly was bountiful for all of the second graders this fall!  Writing a letter, complete with date, greeting, body, closing, and signature was one activity that students enjoyed.  The Goodness Gorillas initiated this letter writing by challenging the second graders to prove that they had been doing good deeds at home, at school and in the community.  We found out that many random acts of kindness occur daily.

Exploring a button box was an open invitation to many math concepts.  The students estimated how many buttons they could hold in their hands.  Then we experimented with grouping buttons in sets of two, five or ten for easier counting.  We also graphed our handfuls of buttons.  Currently we are investigating various tools for measuring.  We used non standard units of measure (hand span, cubits, links) to determine the size of things found in our classroom including our own heights and arm spans.

Our social studies lessons have been focused on discovering the attributes of the city, country and suburbs.  The students learned about each type of neighborhood from a variety of books.  This knowledge was then used to write informative reports and to draw illustrations full of accurate details.  We all enjoyed the culminating field trip, which took us to experience the city and the country, all in the same day!  We were able to view all of the marvelous aspects of the city and the country first hand.  Each was breathtaking in its own wonderful way.  It is knowledge that we're sure will not soon be forgotten!  Could it get any better than this?  Stay tuned.

Second Grade Math Tip:
Math fact practice can be a lot of fun by turning the card game “War” into a math game!  First you will need to take all of the face cards out of the deck, leaving only the numbers 1 – 10.  Deal the cards as usual.  Then each player puts out a card.  Each player should add the numbers showing, and the first person to say the correct answer takes the cards.  Continue the game until one person has all of the cards.  This game can also be used to practice subtraction facts.  When the two cards are out, simply subtract the smaller number from the larger.  Have Fun!
