Whitewater Rafting - one of my passions The Grand Canyon is a magical place, especially when experienced from the river. I've rafted the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon 4 times, personally rowing the entire 286 miles. This is a true wilderness experience with no roads, telephones or services of any kind. Everything is hauled in on the rafts and everything is hauled out as well ... and I mean everything. The suitable campsites are typically found at the side canyons because the side canyons provide the debris for the rapids. This means an unlimited amount of hiking at each campsite to a huge variety of magical places: fren grotto, vasey's paradise, the Anasazi granaries, elves chasm, thunder river, Havasu falls. It's a wonderful time to contemplate life and decompress. My last trip started on February 28 and lasted 28 days. March turned out to be a wonderful time to experience the canyon as no motorized boats are allowed at that time and the weather was mostly wonderful. Such long trips are uncommon, the typical self-guided private trip is less than 3 weeks. Permits are hard to get and the wait is in excess of 14 years. Redwall Cavern A day on the river |
