The Selkie of Sule Skerrie
I heard a mother lull her bairn,
and aye she rocked, and aye she sang.
She took so hard upon the verse
that the heart within the body rang.
"O cradle row, and cradle go,
and aye sleep well, my bairn within;
I ken not who thy father is
nor yet the land that he dwells in."
And up then spake a grey selchie
as aye he woke her from her sleep,
"I'll tell where thy bairn's father is:
he's sittin close by thy bed feet.
I am a man upon the land:
I am a selchie in the sea,
and when I'm far frae e'ery strand
my dwelling is in Sule Skerrie.
And foster well my wee young son,
aye, for a twal-month and a day,
and when that twal-month's fairly done,
I'll come and pay the nourice-fee."
And when that weary twal-month gaed,
he's come to pay the nourice-fee;
he had a coffer fu'o'gowd,
and anither fu' o' the white money.
"upon the skerry is thy son;
upon the skerry lieth he.
Sin thou would see thine ain young son,
now is the time tae speak wi' he."
"But how shall I my young son know
when thou ha' ta'en him far frae me?"
"The one who wears the chain o' gowd,
'man a' the selchies shall be he.
And thou will get a hunter good,
and a richt fine hunter I'm sure he'll be;
and the first aye shot that e'er he shoots
will kill baith my young son and me."
River of Dreams - Billy Joel
In the middle of the, I go walking in the (etc.)
In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep
From the Mountains of Fame to the river so deep
I must be looking for something, something sacred I lost
But the river is wide, and it’s too hard to cross
Even though I know the river is wide I walk down every evening and I stand at the shore
I try to cross to the opposite side so I can finally find what I’ve been looking for
In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep
Through the Valley of Fear, to a river so deep
I’ve been searching for something taken out of my soul
Something I’d never lose, something somebody stole
I don’t know why I go walking at night but now I’m tired and I don’t wanna walk anymore
Hope it doesn’t take the rest of my life until I find what it is that I’ve been looking for
In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep
Through the Jungle of the Damned, to the river so deep
I know I’m searching for something, something so hard to find
And it can only be seen by the eyes of the blind
In the middle of the night
I go walking in the, in the middle of the (etc.)
I’m not sure of my life after this, God knows I’ve never been a spiritual man
Half the time I’m running far away to the river that is running to the Promised Land
In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep
Through the Desert of the Truth to the river so deep
We all end in the ocean, we all start in the stream
We’re all carried along by the river of dreams
In the middle of the night
Beautiful Dreamer
Beautiful dreamer,
Wake unto me
Starlight and dewdrops
Are awaiting thee
Sounds of the rude world
Heard in the day
Led by the moonlight
Have all passed away
Beautiful dreamer,
Queen of my song
List' while I woo thee
With soft melody
Gone are the cares of
Life's busy throng
Beautiful dreamer
Awake unto me
Beautiful dreamer,
Awake unto me
Foolish Games - Jewel
You took your coat off and stood in the rain,
You're always crazy like that.
And I watched from my window,
Always felt I was outside looking in on you.
You're always the mysterious one with
Dark eyes and careless hair,
You were fashionably sensitive
But too cool to care.
You stood in my doorway, with nothing to say
Besides some comment on the weather.
Well in case you failed to notice,
In case you failed to see,
This is my heart bleeding before you,
This is me down on my knees, and...
These foolish games are tearing me apart,
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart.
You're breaking my heart.
You're always brilliant in the morning,
Smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee.
Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you.
You loved Mozart and you'd speak of your loved ones
As I clumsily strummed my guitar.
Well, excuse me, guess I've mistaken you for somebody else,
Somebody who gave a damn,
Somebody more like myself.
These foolish games are tearing me apart,
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart.
You're breaking my heart.
You took your coat off,
Stood in the rain,
You're always crazy like that
