This is a little bit on info on patron deities. Soon this page will have many links to different deities, gods in other cultures, why we have gods and many other subjects. For now please enjoy this small piece on patron deities.

A relationship with a God is a personal thing and will be different for every person. It is  important to separate a relationship with a God from a relationship with the divine as different experiences. A relationship with one deity in needs to have some personal connection for the person. For example a coven may work with one particular deity but it does not have to be THE patron/matron deity of everyone involved for personal rituals. The deity invited there would be more personal.

The deity may relate to the personality of the person in some way, for example lawyers may have a Goddess of justice as their patron deity. In some cases a person may have had a unique experience or vision from which they established a connection with a particular deity. Essentially there really has to be a knowledge of the deity, their pantheon, origin, mythology, aspects and why the particular deity resonates more strongly than others. A deity shouldn't be picked overnight just because the witch felt like it!

During some reading done for this particular question the below paragraph was found which explains part of why we as humans use patron deities. This passage comes from the Wild Ideas website and can be found in their Temple Library section, it is titled On Patron Deities. Available online http://www.wildideas.net/temple/library/patrons.html

“However, ultimate nameless divinities, whether polarized by gender or not,

are difficult, if not impossible, to maintain a personal relationship with.

Wicca is a devotional religion, centred on the creation of an intimate

personal bond with divinity. This is much easier to do with individual

deities, who have distinct personalities and essences of their own with

which one can bond much more readily and closely than one can with

the more abstract and conceptual God and Goddess. The distinction

is similar to that between the focussed, personalized love you feel for a

lover, parent or close friend versus the more diffuse and generalized

love a compassionate person may feel for all creation.”

This quote hopefully shows more clearly the difference between the divine and a patron deity. If you are wishing to choose a patron deity please be patient. It may take months, or even a few years for a particular deity to develop a relationship with you. Be on the lookout for dreams, figures seen in meditation, unusual animal encounters and feelings during connections with the divine.
