One who has received the "overlook" (Malocchio)
may suddenly and unexplainedly become ill.
A severe headache preventing a person from going about their daily routine can be a sign of Malocchio
(especially centered between the eyes and forehead)
Becoming extremely tired and groggy
without reasonable cause may also be a sign.
The 'malocchio' can be detected in several ways.
One way being to take a bowl full of rainwater
and place three drops of olive oil,
one upon the other into the bowl of water.
If the drops remain together
then the illness is natural
If the oil spreads out and widens,
or the drops separate,
or smear across the surface of the water,
it means that the person is stricken.
Another method is to look at the presumed victim in the eyes.
If you see your own reflection, then the person is unharmed.
If you do not see your own reflection,
then the person could be a victim of the evil eye.
I have a sure thing that happens to me whenever I get around someone who has been inflicted with the evil eye.
I start yawning uncontrollably.
Now as for a 'cure'
There are many ways as each region of Italy has their own formula.
To break the Malocchio spell,
take two sewing needles
and insert the tip of one needle into the eye of the other,
saying:
"Eyes against eyes
and the holes of the eyes,
envy cracks
and
eyes burst."
Then drop the needles into the water,
on top of the oil drops.
Next, sprinkle three pinches of salt into the water.
Take a pair of scissors and jab them into the water three times,
through the oil drops.
Take the scissors and "cut" the air above the bowl three times.
The spell is then broken.
Another way is to wear your clothes to the reverse side
and suspend old shoes at home.
Still another way is to burn a candle for 9 consecutive evenings
and
each day throw the residual wax as far as possible from your home
My Grandma used to tell me that whenever someone said how beautiful,
or how cute, or how good a baby was
that you must always say "God Bless You"
to ensure that mallocchio will not find its way to the infant.

The prayers and invocations we use are powerful
Any time I've removed 'malocchio' from someone
it entered my body
I received the curse and always became ill

it was always temporary.
