Chapter 1: The Discovery

One sunny afternoon in Vancouver, in a so-called home office, Jay sat at his workstation, bored to tears with how limited the world wide web gets after hours of mindless surfing. He, at the time, thought that surfing the web would allow him to keep a certain girl, Lorri, off his mind. Lorri was the girl that Jay was enamored with during that summer, and every moment of free time he had was spent thinking about her. He was on the verge of going crazy for this one girl, who he not only knew nothing about, but would never even give him a second glance. He had already planned to tell Lorri about his feelings for her, and had came up with what he thought would be the perfect method of delivery: a love letter.

After being online for the last few hours searching for lyrics for some of his favourite love songs to include with the letter, he decided to check the web for anyone else who was named Lorri, relying on his most frequently used search engine. To his surprise, there were a significant number of hits to his query. He randomly selected one entry from Hong Kong, and clicked his mouse button. Given the physical distance, his selection required a few more seconds than usual to come through the telephone line.

The website, now loaded, consisted of a basic layout with several links to this Lorri's biographical information, her university, her interests, and her friends' pages. Jay, being curious, checked out Lorri's bio, and found pictures of her. She was nothing like he expected her to be, as the picture showed a girl who was nowhere close to being as physically appealing as his beloved Lorri. Having seen enough, he backed up to the previous page, noted the university than she attended, and checked out her list of friends. Apparently, this Lorri had many friends, and out of curiosity, he chose one link labeled Mary Kay.

Once again, Jay went through the motions of looking through the index page, which also included links for her university, her bio and interests, and her friends. Being reluctant, yet extremely curious, he checked the bio. To his surprise, the pictures of Mary Kay were of significantly better quality, and better taste, than those on Lorri's page. Mary Kay's pictures seemed to reveal a girl of average beauty, but Jay had already grown slightly fond of Mary Kay. This was due to his unpleasant experience from a few minutes earlier, and Mary Kay appeared to be a big improvement.

Being intrigued by Mary Kay, he proceeded to read the rest of the bio page, but instead of finding cold facts about Mary Kay listed in a bulleted list one after another on the page, he found a letter to the reader. Jay was more intrigued than ever, and he read the letter, finding various facts about Mary Kay in the letter. One thing he noted was that she went by the name Kay, and that she really liked cars. Jay, also being a car guy, was beginning the think he had found the girl of his dreams. What Jay found to be the most interesting about the letter was the last paragraph, where Kay had mentioned that she was looking for a long-term email penpal. Jay was really excited about this opportunity to actually communicate with her, so he wrote her a letter applying for the penpal position.
