Chapter 6: Jay's First Letter
After another week, Jay's final exams began. Jay only had three exams to do as he was taking it easy with his course load. These consisted of a couple of microeconomics exams and a statistics exam wedged in between them. Just when Jay's exam began, he received his third letter from Kay. This letter was different from the previous two as it was an aerogramme, and not the fancy letter paper that Kay had used before. Again, there was a gift for Jay. This time, it was a photo of a Chinese singer that Kay liked. Jay recognized her as Tarcy So from surfing the web.
In this letter, Kay talked about the fact that her summer job with the university is nearly completed, and her plans to go to Thailand for a vacation at the end of August. She told Jay specifically to send her a photograph of him so that she can take it with her on her trip. She also said that she would be moving in the middle of September and would have to give Jay her new mailing address later on. For a moment, Jay wondered whether these plans would interfere with her schoolwork, but then realized that Kay actually starts her semester in October. Jay then put the letter away, and emailed her a thank you.
Jay's first economics exam came and went without incident. He found it to be difficult, but was not surprised by it. He went home to email Kay - to tell her that he had completed his first exam, and continue his studying. Jay's statistics exam did not go so well. He was extremely nervous before the exam, and as a result, his mind went blank when he looked at the first three questions, which composed more than 20% of the exam. He wisely decided to skip them and go on to questions that he thought he could do. Jay gave his best effort and wrote what he thought the answers could be, even though he knew that he was very likely wrong. By the time the exam ended, he was exhausted, and very frustrated. He went home, drank a cola - pretending it was the professor's blood, and emailed Kay about his bad day. She tried to cheer him up by telling him that he may be surprised by how well he actually did. Jay thanked her, but had to put it behind him and focus on his next exam.
To Jay's relief, his last exam was much like the first, and even before he made it home, he immediately emailed Kay to tell her he was done. He was so elated that he could put these exams behind him that he overlooked the fact that at the time he was writing to her, it would have been 4am in Hong Kong. He would have had time to get home and write her a long email message before she even arrived in the morning. Sure enough, that's what he did.
Jay wrote her a message telling her that he would get started on a letter for her that night, and that he would put off his celebrating until after he wrote the letter. Naturally, this was more of Jay's charm, he had no intention of putting off any festivities. All he had to do was to simply back date his letter to her. In the end, it didn't matter, since Kay replied by telling him that he could postpone writing to her until after he has had a little rest.
On the following day, Jay sat down at his desk and wrote Kay a letter. Jay thought about all the gifts that he had received from her and decided that he needed to give something to her. She would definitely love a photograph of him, but did not have one to give her. He decided on using his computer to create a greeting card for her, one with a picture of a rose on it. After an hour of work, he had a card ready to give to her.
Now it was time to write the letter. Jay told her that he was a little nervous about writing a letter to her and that he didn't have much to say. He also apologized for not having a photo available, and told her that he would get some taken as soon as he had the time. He ended the letter the only way he knew how: with a song, and an "I love you," just like in his email messages.
