Chapter 18: Georgina

Some find it in the face of their children

I've never known agony like the agony I felt giving birth to Bryan. My little boy took fourteen hours to arrive and how I envy the three hour labour that Nicola had. Nicky is the proudest father I've ever seen, and the dawning wonder in his face when he first held him was heartbreakingly joyous. He was in love at first sight. So am I, despite my exhaustion, I want to stay this way forever, and never miss a moment of him growing up.

It didn't need to be spoken that we would call him Bryan, we both knew the instant he was born. Bryan Alexander Byrne. My firstborn, and hopefully not my last. Despite the pain, it was worth it. And it really was true that you forget all the pain once you have the baby in your arms. Somehow I knew that it wouldn't be long before Shane would be christening his own child. And Kian... I could only hope that Kian would one day find a woman to love him in the way Nicola loved Mark, whom he still envied.

I cherished every second of Bryan's life. His first smile, his first steps, toddling between me and Nicky, then on to Shane, and to Nicola. He was such a bubbly baby, he was so trusting, he would go to anyone, but he was definately mummy's boy, he was happy with anyone as long as I was in the room, if I left, he'd fuss. That's something that's gender related, apparantly young children favour the parent of the opposite sex, feeling a sub-conscious hatred for the other, wanting to dominate. Me and my psychological training. It was true though, and little Missy followed Mark everywhere, as Bryan did me. I loved seeing her face lighting up when her daddy came home after being away. Bryan adored his daddy too, one of his first sentences was "Miss you daddy" Bryan was bubbly, always giggling, but Missy, you couldn't have shut her up! You couldn't have satisfied her curiosity, she'd always wandered around, picking things up, asking question after question. Now she was top of her class in her first year at primary school at school, she'd come home with a straight A report on the day Nicola found out...

Missy adored Bryan. She was two when he was born, and now she loved to teach him, she was so bright and intelligent. She had the patience of her father and the stubbornness. But Bryan's attention span was like his fathers, which wasn't long, and he soon grew bored. Sometimes it frustrated her, but most of the time she was happy to play with him, push him on his swing, while Nicola and I talked. Bryan talked of her constantly, always wanting her to come over.

For that reason, I noticed when Nicola started to tire easily. But that's the next part of their story...
