Episode 2 - A Snake In The Grass


Stardate 2665.114
TCS Concordia, Gwynedd System

"Well I guess this is it." said Usagi.
"It was great to see you again." said Rei.
"I hope you have more chances to fight alongside Chris" said Mariko.
"I wish I could stay. But I'm needed at Caernarvaron. I'll miss you guys"
"Sayonara Usa-chan. I'll miss you too" Rei hugged Usagi.
"Sayonara Usagi-san, it was nice meeting you" said Mariko.

Usagi, Blair, and Liz head for the hangar and launch into space. A figure lurked
unnoticed in the shadows, placing a box with a display next to a stack of barrels
filled with rocket fuel.


Caernarvon Station, a few minutes later.

The three Ferrets come out of Autonav and arrive in parked orbit around Caernavrvon
station.
"Caernarvon, this is Maverick requesting landing." said Blair.
"Hold station Maverick. We are clearing a freighter for launch." responded the
station's comm officer.
"Roger that Caernarvon." Blair switches his comm to his wingmen. "Well it looks
like back to normal life at Caernarvon."
"Yeah, tell me about it." Usagi grumbled.
"I hope you two get that transfer to the Concordia" said Liz.
"Huh? Transfer?"
"Oh, didn't you hear? Col. Devereaux is going to request for you two to transfer to
the Concordia"
"Wow. Sounds too good to be true" said Usagi.
"It won't happen. The Admiral hates me." grumbled Blair.
"If I wasn't retiring next month, I'd apply for transfer in a heartbeat." said Liz.


Hangar deck, TCS Concordia.
Maintenance crews continue their work, not realizing the danger nearby. A suspicious
looking clock counts towards zero. Suddenly, an explosion rocks the hangar.


Caenarvon Station
"Well, at least you wouldn't have a problem Shadow." said Usagi. Their conversation is
interrupted by an emergency call.
"This is the TCS Concordia call all available Terran ships. We need assistance. We are
under attack by a Kilrathi Strike force. Our hangar is damanged and we cannot launch
fighters."
"This is Maverick. What's your status Concordia?" said Blair.
"New orders from the Admiral: Defend the Concordia"
"Roger that. Shadow, Moonhopper, reset your Autonav to the Concordia"
"Uh, Maverick, I have a bad feeling about this. I think Shadow shouldn't come" said Usagi.
"Not a chance Moonhopper. We go together" said Liz.
"But..." Usagi started, but was cut off by Blair.
"You heard the Admiral - all available fighers. They're in big trouble. Let's go"


TCS Concordia, Two minutes later

The Concordia was being swarmed by several Sartha fighters just as the three Ferrets
arrived.
"Glad to have you Maverick!" said the carrier's comm officer.
"I've got one of them" said Usagi. "Splash one!"
"This guy's tough" said Liz "He's in the kitty litter."
"Got him!" said Blair "Watch your back Moonhopper!"
"I see him! I see him!" blurted Usagi, rolling wildly. "I can't skake him!"
"I'm on him!" said Liz. "He's toast!"
"Thanks Shadow!" said a relieved Usagi.
"Got the last one in sight" said Blair "Nailed him! Alright that's all of them." He
switches his comm to the Concordia. "Concordia what's your status?"
"Hold your station Maverick. We cannot launch fighters yet"
"Damn it Concordia!" spat Blair.
"I'm picking up a squadrion of Drakhri and a Ralatha class destroyer" said Usagi.
"I've got em!" said Liz, breaking formation and diving into the Drakhri.
"Liz! Hold formation we'll take them together!" said Blair.
"LIZ!!! THEY'RE ON YOUR TAIL!!! BREAK!!!" yelled an exasperated Usagi.
Blair and Usagi watched in horror as two Drakhri close in on Liz's tail as she is
unable to shake them off. The two Kilrathi fighters fire their guns, and within moments,
Liz's Ferret explodes in a fireball. No ejection pod is seen.
"LIZ!!! IIE!!!" cried Usagi.
"DAMN IT!!!" shouted Blair. "Moonhopper, there's nothing left we can do. We have to
ward of that strike force"
"H-ha-ai, C-chris" said Usagi, choking in tears.
"I got you now!" said Blair in rage "Splashed one!"
"I'm not letting you get away!" said Usagi, blasting a second Kilrathi fighter to
bits "That was for Liz!"
"Watch it Moonhopper! He's on your tail!" blurted Blair. "Got him!"
"Thanks for saving my butt again Maverick" said Usagi.
"Don't thank me till its all over" said Blair. "There's two more. Let's take 'em one
on one."
"Good idea" responded Usagi. She closed in on Drakhri in her sights "Splashed him!"
"It's just you and me now!" said Blair as he targetted the last remaning Drakhri. He
fired his guns. "Got him!"
"Enemy capital ship destroyed" the Concordia comm officer said just as Blair dusted
the last Drakhri.


Concordia Barracks, after the funeral service held for Lt. Elizabeth "Shadow" Norwood

"Chris, Jeanette and I wish to let you know how sorry we are about Liz." said Mariko.
"She was one of the few friends I had after the Tiger's Claw disaster." said Blair.
"I understand more than you know Chris. I felt the same after Bossman died." said Jeanette.
"After just one month she would have gone back to her family. Damn it!" yelled Blair.
"The war has taken so much from us. But you cannot dwell on these losses. Considering
those of us still alive, we still have each other." said Mariko.
"You're not the only one to lose Liz, Chris" said Usagi, walking in, her eyes puffy and
red from crying.
"Usagi! I'm, I'm sorry" said Blair, turning to the newcomer.
"She was my friend too" said Usagi.
"It's alright" said Blair, instinctively taking Usagi into a hug and letting her cry
on his shoulder.
"You're not alone Usagi-san." said Mariko, approaching, and placing a hand on Usagi's
shoulder. "We're all here as your friends"
"Arigato, Mariko-san" said Usagi.



Niven System, 24 hours later

Concordia Barracks

"Glad to have you on board Usagi-chan" said Rei.
"I'm just glad to be off that junky space station, not to mention fly with you again
Rei-chan" replied Usagi. "If only Liz..."
"Let it go Usagi." said Rei, cutting Usagi off. "There's nothing more we can do."
"Sigh. You're right. Has Chris been transferred to the Concordia too?"
"Hai. Jeanette-san talked the Admiral into it."
"He sure is a great pilot, judging from our last mission."
"You should hear his stories"
"Already did, from Mariko-chan"
"Oh yeah you're right" giggled Usagi.
"Well, let's head for the briefing room"
"Okay"


Briefing Room, 5 minutes later

"As you know, there are reported Kilrathi activites in this area. We have the TCS William
Tell with us to assist in our patrols. Spirit, you'll fly Alpha wing and perform a standard
partrol." said Jeanette.
"Shall I be flying with Maverick?" asked Mariko.
"No, the Admiral doesn't want him on combat missions. You'll have Moonhopper on your wing
instead."
"Congrats! You're going on your first combat mission already" Rei nudged Usagi.
"Eheheh, I guess so" Usagi stuttered.
"Meanwhile, Maverick will be on a special reconnasance mission. You'll be flying a broadsword
equipped with a jump tracer. It will identify jump trails left by Kilrathi capital ships."
said Jeanette.
"No problem" replied Blair.
"StarFire and I will be on a second patrol. Now any questions? Alright let's fly."


In space, after launch

"Set course to Nav 1" said Mariko.
"Roger!" replied Usagi as they engaged autopilot in their Rapiers to the first Nav point.
Upon arrival they chanced upon a squadron of 4 Drakri.
"Heads up! We've got company! Break and attack!" barked Mariko.
"I'm on them!" replied Usagi. "Splashed one!"
"Watch your back!" said Mariko "He's out!"
"Thanks!" said Usagi.
"Two left! Let's take them one-on-one" ordered Markio.
"On the tail of one!" said Usagi "Splash two!"
"Last one!" said Mariko "Nailed! Good job Moonhopper. Let's head for the next Nav point"
"Got it!" replied Usagi
Not spotting anything at Nav 2, they proceed to Nav 3, which happend to be in the middle
of an asteroid field.
"Ugh! This one's really tight!" barked Usagi.
"Fighters detected! 4 Sartha! Be careful!" said Mariko.
"He's on your tail!" said Usagi. "Got him!"
"Thanks Moonhopper. Got his wingman on my sights" said Mariko. "Splashed one!"
"Agh! I hit a rock!" yelled Usagi.
"Damage report?" said Mariko.
"Port shields out, but no structure damange." said Usagi.
"Watch your 9'o-clock then." said Mariko "Two left, let's go one on one"
"Come on!" said Usagi, aiming for the Sartha "Splashed two"
"You're last, Kilrathi!" said Mariko aiming for the final Sartha "He's out of it. Alright
let's get out of this rock pit and proceed to Nav 4"
"Thank heaven!" replied Usagi. After making their way out of the asteriod field, they
autopilot to Nav 4, and chance upon a Dorkathi transport escorted by 2 Jalkehi heavy fighters.
"Alright, take the escorts out, then go for the transport." said Mariko.
"Hai!" replied Usagi, breaking formation and going for one of the Jalkehi. "Splashed one!"
"Now for you" said Mariko as she closed in on the second Jalkehi.
"Watch it Spirit! His turret's on you!" shouted Usagi. "Going in to distract him!"
"I've got him now" said Mariko "Nailed! Alright let's finish off the transport"
"Missles ready" said Usagi "firing!"
"Got lock" said Mariko "fire!" All the missles hit the transport, which explodes.
"Alright we're done here. Good job Moonhopper. Let's head home" said Mariko.
"Roger that!" replied Usagi, as they hit their autopilot and head back to the Concordia.


Concordia Observation deck, 10 minutes later

"You're an excellent pilot Usagi" said Mariko.
"Arigato. You're a great pilot too" said Usagi.
"Well, not as great as Blair. I sure wish he could have flown with us" said Mariko.
"You were saying?" said Blair as he walked in.
"Chris! You're back!" said Usagi.
"How did your misson go, my friend?" asked Mariko.
"Not too bad, for recon. If the Admiral wanted me away from combat he'll be disappointed
to know what I was up against." said Blair with a smirk.
"You found some Kilrathi?" asked Usagi.
"A few. Five all in all, and all shot down" said Blair.
"Just you? And in a slow lumbering bomber? Not too surprising" said Mariko.
"Hey cut it out Mariko!" said Blair.
"I have to admit that was impressive, considering you had no afterburner" said Usagi.
"Well, I would have gladly traded it for a mission with Mariko if it wasn't for Tolwyn"
said Blair. "By the way how did you two do?"

"Usagi was impressive. Each of us took our share of fighters, along with an enemy transport"
said Mariko.
"Congratulations Usagi! You've got praise from a well experienced pilot." said Blair.
"Ahehehe, arigato" said Usagi embarrasingly.
"Chris! Yamero!" said Mariko.
"Hey guys! How about joining us for some cards?" asked Stingray.
"I'm in. How about you two?" said Blair.
"I'm in too." replied Mariko.
"I think I'll pass" said Usagi.
"Okay, see you later then" said Blair.
"Hey Usagi!" Rei approached, followed by a Kilrathi with black fur.
"Hey! Um, Rei, isn't that, um, a Kilrathi?" asked Usagi, pointing to Rei's companion.
"Yes. Usagi, this is First Fang Luna Nar Mau, callsign Black Jaguar" said Rei. "Luna, this
is Lt. Tsukino Usagi"
"Ah the Moonhopper" said Luna.
"Luna is one of the Kilrathi fighting on our side" said Rei.
"I see. Chris said some Kilrathi defected to the Confederation" said Usagi.
"It's true. In fact the commander who lead the defection is right over there with Blair"
said Luna, pointing to the striped Kilrathi seated on the table.
"That's Kal Shintar Ralgha Nar Hhallas, callsign Hobbes" said Rei.
"Uh, okay." said Usagi, nervously.
"What? Something wrong?"
"Um, nothing" said Usagi.
"I understand if you feel hostility towards our race. But I assure you I do not share
the same belief as the Emperor as well as everyone loyal to him" said Luna.
"That's right." said Rei.
"I guess" said Usagi.
