Resources | |
We used a number of information resources to plan and guide us on our trip. The most useful are listed below. |
The Scottish Tourist Board | The Scottish Tourist Board is an invaluable resource. In Scotland, almost every reasonably large town has a Tourist Information Centre where you can book rooms (for a small fee), get information, and directions. Unless you are going to a very popular destination during the busy season (i.e., Edinburgh in August), you don't really have to book ahead. We booked our first few night via the Internet and used Tourist Information Centers in-country for everything else. |
![]() | Also helpful is the Automobile Association's web site. They have a Hotel Guide and Booking Service that lists and rate accomodations across the U.K. Plus they provide a handy milage estimator, and you can give yourself sticker shock and check the price of gasoline. |
![]() | Historic Scotland is a government agency that owns and maintains over 300 historic sites across Scotland, including must see places like Edinburgh Castle. If you plan to go to more than a couple sites you can purchase Scottish Explorer Tickets which give you ulimited admission to all properties. We purchased the 7 day pass for 15 GB pounds each. Historic Scotland properties are noted throughout these pages by the logo on the left. |
![]() | The National Trust is a charity that owns buildings and land of historic and architectural importance. Like Historic Scotland, if you plan to go to more than a couple sites you become a member of the Trust for 27 GB pounds. Trust properties are also noted throughout. |
![]() | The Rough Guide Scotland was our primary guide book. We were very impressed with the content and accuracy of the book. The only downside, there are not a lot of color pictures. |
![]() | Since we rented a car, a good map was essential. The Michelin Great Britain & Ireland Tourist and Motoring Atlas served us well. The book is spiral bound, so it was easy to use while driving on the left and speeding around roundabouts. |
