Travel Tips
  • Transportation - If you want to go off the beaten path in Scotland, rent a car. Unless you are very coordinated or a professional driver, I'd recommend reserving, in advance, an automatic transmission car. Remember left is right and right is wrong. We found the roads to be in very good shape and in most places outside of cities, empty.

  • Money - Use your ATM card. The machines are plentiful and you get the best exchange rate. Credit cards were accepted at most larger establishments, but some B&B's prefer cash or travelers checks in British pounds. A cheap way to cash travelers checks, if they are in British Pounds, is to use them for admission fees or to pay for drinks in a pub. You get your change back in Pounds and don't have to pay any bank commissions.

  • Accomodations - We prefer B&B's, they are about half the price of comparable hotels and you get to meet interesting people. The Scottish Tourist Board rating system is a good guide, we stayed in three star plus properties and were pleased every time.
