I suggest that if you got a hold of anyone in Hicks Bay or Te Araroa area, many of the whanau's
there would know the Poi Family...maybe sending a letter or email to the local marae in Te Araroa
or yes as someone suggested the Local High School in Te Araroa.
Maybe Stone Wanoa a local man there who use to teach me Maori Language, if he still lives there
might know a bit more bout the Poi Family maybe addressing it to :Stone Wanoa, C/- Te Araroa Post
Office, East Coast, Te Araroa , Im not sure if Stone and his family still live there though so maybe
you might need to just send a letter and hope they still live there, I have not seen stone in many
years so I have no idea what his response would be...Good Luck

All we know is that she was four years old when she last saw him. He resided in Kings Cross,

in Aotearoa he came from, and has no connection whatsoever with his side of the family. You can

Kia ora, if you are from the same Harris's from North Island NZ, then you are most certainly
connected. I am a decentdant of Christopher and Hore Harris of Maungamuka, near Hokianga. I
will ask my brother as he has the whakapapa, mail me on my e-mail address, as we also live
in Australia, and he knows more about the whanau.
good luck!!!

There was a tipuna by the name of Apeahama kaipipi who came from Omahu in HB. Our family descent
from him and he was around during the time of Renata te Kawepo.
If there is a connection, try searching Ngati Hinemanu or Ngai te Upokoiri.

Te Ururoa/Rewharewha from Whangaroa/Kaeo area

hello all,
searching out some details on Te Ururoa, who also went by the name of Rewharewha. In the
Dictionary of NZ bibliography
he is listed as brother in law of Hongi Hika, whose wife had the same name as Te Ururoa's
daughter (Tukareti Makareta) according to the Berghan whakapapa.

He was born in Whangaroa in Tai Tokerau about 1800. He is of Ngapuhi and Ngati Kahu, brother
in law of Hongi Hika and fought with him against the British throughout the northern wars.
I would like to know if there is any meaning behind the name Rewharewha or the entymology
of it (he got the name Te Ururoa, The Shark, because he had a bit of a reputation as being
rather blood thirsty)

Any info much appreciated.

Not sure if this is of any help to you. I come from the family of Putiki Rewharewha whose
whanau is from Ngaitai, specifically Torere, Bay of Plenty, Opotiki area. Where the name
comes from I have no idea, other than we go all the way back to Torerenuiarua and Manakiao,
and there go back directly to Tainui. Don't know if there is any connection.
Keep in touch.

TOETOE/Rewharewha - Arahia

Kia ora,
I am trying to find info on my great great grandmother
Arahia Toetoe. She was married to
Heemi Riwhi and they were from
    Pupuke in the
    1880's.

On my great grandmothers (Puti Riwhi) marriage certificate it says Arahia's maiden name is
Rewharewha. Although on Heemi's death certificate it says
  Toetoe...

In a whakapapa I have it suggests that Toetoe and Rewharewha were siblings. And that Arahia's
first name is actually Ngatoka.

She is my missing link. I'd greatly appreciate any info at all.
Kind regards,
Laramay

Hope this will be of help, but am not sure if there is any connection. My grandfather was
Whareparoa Rewharewha who had several brothers and sisters. His father was
   Putiki.

I have no idea where the name Rewharewha came from, but the family originated from Ngaitai
country in Torere, Bay of Plenty, with roots that lead directly back to Torerenuiarua a
daughter of the chief of the Tainui canoe.

I will keep in touch.

Hi Lia,
I finally found my family tree book such as it is. My great grandmother
Minnie Ellen Wade was the daughter of
Ellen Kawharu Wilson who was married to
Neils Dyrger Jepsen on 17th of August 1903
   She died on the
   5th of November 1943.

Her surname Wilson suggests she was married before maybe.

My great grandmother
Minnie Ellen was married to Neils's brother
Jens. It must have been pretty wierd at the time a mother and daughter marrying two brothers....
hope this is helpful.keep in touch. Adele
