In the Dictionary of NZ bibliography he is listed as brother in law of Hongi Hika, whose wife had the same name as Te Ururoa's daughter (Tukareti Makareta) according to the Berghan whakapapa. He was born in Whangaroa in Tai Tokerau about 1800. He is of Ngapuhi and Ngati Kahu, brother in law of Hongi Hika and fought with him against the British throughout the northern wars. I would like to know if there is any meaning behind the name Rewharewha or the entymology of it (he got the name Te Ururoa, The Shark, because he had a bit of a reputation as being rather blood thirsty) Any info much appreciated. I come from the family of Putiki Rewharewha whose whanau is from Ngaitai, specifically Torere, Bay of Plenty, Opotiki area. Where the name comes from I have no idea, other than we go all the way back to Torerenuiarua and Manakiao, and there go back directly to Tainui. Don't know if there is any connection. Keep in touch. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TE HAUATA Posted by Candice autumngirl55@hotmail.com August 1, 2002, 10:04 am 210.56.32.40 Does anyone have this last name? She was married to Heemi Riwhi and they were from Pupuke in the 1880's. On my great grandmothers (Puti Riwhi) marriage certificate it says Arahia's maiden name is Rewharewha. Although on Heemi's death certificate it says Toetoe... In a whakapapa I have it suggests that Toetoe and Rewharewha were siblings. And that Arahia's first name is actually Ngatoka. She is my missing link. I'd greatly appreciate any info at all. Kind regards, Laramay Re: TOETOE/Rewharewha - Arahia Posted by Marsie Nepe Mo'o moot001@hawaii.rr.com November 8, 2002, 6:47 am in reply to "TOETOE/Rewharewha - Arahia" 204.210.96.199 Hope this will be of help, but am not sure if there is any connection. My grandfather was Whareparoa Rewharewha who had several brothers and sisters. His father was Putiki. I have no idea where the name Rewharewha came from, but the family originated from Ngaitai country in Torere, Bay of Plenty, with roots that lead directly back to Torerenuiarua a daughter of the chief of the Tainui canoe. I will keep in touch. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Son Posted by Pauline M Winter (Nee Poi) on August 1, 2002, 5:06 am 144.134.85.207 Info: Todd Alex (Nee Winter) Adopted-Devine Born 1971...Titahi Bay...Porirua...Keneperu? My great grandmother Minnie Ellen Wade was the daughter of Ellen Kawharu Wilson who was married to Neils Dyrger Jepsen on 17th of August 1903 She died on the 5th of November 1943. Her surname Wilson suggests she was married before maybe. My great grandmother Minnie Ellen was married to Neils's brother Jens. It must have been pretty wierd at the time a mother and daughter marrying two brothers.... hope this is helpful.keep in touch.
