You would be able to get your information from Wellington National Library. There is a book
called the children of the mist. The Tuhoe Whakapapa's is located in the book.

Hi
I don't know whether what I have (which is very little) is able to assist you, but there is
a lady who I have come accross on the internet whose name is Marlene Porter, she is
searching for her father who is Norman Te Kanawa, her grandfathers name was Kumurawainui Te
Kanawa and her grandmothers name was Te Waipounamu Ngarotata. I know that Kiri Te Kanawa is
a cousin of my fathers (not immediate, but 2nd or 3rd I believe), but I am trying to find
out how Te Waipounamu Ngarotata would be related to my fathers family so I could hopefully
find a link there. I hope this assists you in someway. I haven't contacted Marlene Porter
but do have her email address if this would help your search.

Researching these whakapapa.
I've been looking at a microfilm in Turnbull Library

"Maori genealogy East Coast" by Francis Robert HARRIS (1858-1931)
annotated by Elsdon BEST; Microfilm 0089, Archives Section, Turnbull Library,
Wellington. This is about 500 pages of cross-referenced handwritten charts.
To date we have only copied pages with ancestors of Makere Ngongohau who

Has anyone else used this fantastic resource of

I am part of the "Tuari Whanau" originally from Northland. Tuari was also the name given
for the "Stewart whanau" from there, being one in the same - but there are also other
"Tuari Whanau" I believe, who may or may not be related. We ourselves have had two reunions
to date - one up North in Matauri Bay and the other in the Bay Of Plenty at Raukokore
Marae. All discovering our own connections of North with South East. I am not sure whether
this is the "Tuari Whanau" you may be looking for but if you are interested you could make
contact with me by email and we could talk further on this -

Just some information that may help you. Adoption records
This is some legislative information regarding how to find out more information about
adoptions.

The operation of privacy legislation restricts the availability of information to only the
birth parents and the child his or herself.

1. When where adoptions introduced in New Zealand Adoptions were made in a Court since 1882.
However there was no requirement to notify Births, Deaths and Marriages to endorse the
original birth registration or create a new entry with the adoptive details until 1916.
Birth records that related to adoptions made prior to 1916 where not updated until the
1980's. It is impossible to detect information through the indexes to birth registrations.
The original certificate is endorsed "adopted".

All records relating to entry that are endorsed with an adoption endorsement are closed for
all access requests, unless the following:

The adopted person (only) can apply under the Adult Adoption Information Act 1985 for a copy
of the pre adoptive birth certificate if they are 20 years or older. Please note that the
birth parents, adoptive parents cannot obtain a copy of the pre adoptive birth record.
The birth parents can make an application to Adoption Services, Child Youth and Family for
information relating to the new names of the child after adoption.
There is provision to apply for a photocopy of a pre adoptive birth registration under
Section 76(3) of the Births, Deaths and Marriages Act 1995 for someone else e.g uncle,
mother. However all parties to the adoption must be deceased, the adoptive person, birth
parent(s) and adoptive parent(s) or 120 years have passed since the birth of the adoptive
person.

Child Youth and Family deal with Adoptions

www.cyf.govt.nz

Your birth certificate Once you turn 20, you can write to the Registrar-General of Births,
Deaths and Marriage (PO BOX 10 526, Wellington) to get a copy of your original birth
certificate (section 4 of the Act). Your birth certificate may show the details of one or
both of your birth parents.

You must give the Registrar-General:
your full name
your place of birth
your date of birth
the full name(s) of your adoptive parents
your address
the fee needed to obtain the birth certificate.

I WISH YOU WELL...

Hi Vanessa
In my humble opinion there is no reason why you can not use Uenuku as a name for your son
as there is no logical reason that you can not use Tamatekapua or any other name that you
choose. However if you would like to link your son's name to one of your tipuna then some
research might find an appropriate and meaningful one to use. Each of the tribes are able
to trace themselves back to the mystical and heavenly gods like Uenuku in some form or
another.

In answer to your question - Only Nga Puhi as a people can answer your question but if you
were asking the question as a Nga Puhi descendant, it is up to you entirely what name you
choose for your son. Good luck

A lot of pictures and photographs of maori men and women have been the results of excellent
works by people like Lindauer, Goldie and Sangl. Many more reprints and copies have been
made and they could number into the thousands. Of course the pictures you have could have
been done by someone else entirely. Your use of the term 'pictures' does not describe the
works enough to make an educated guess - are they oil paintings, sketches, photographs etc
because it can rule out a number of artists.

Suggestion
1. Go to your local library and tell them your problem, they will point you in the right
direction.

2. Post copies to this notice board and you could possibly get a response.

Good Luck

You need to go into the Maori Land Court, 1st Floor, Haupapa St, Rotorua. If you have block

social welfare in Otahuhu. This child then had a closed adoption, and as far as I know
social welfare was able to meet with the mother of this child. I am the daughter of that
child and am looking to speak with anyone who finds this story familiar or who knows who

Kia ora for your korero.
However, social welfare will not open the adoption papers as it was my mother who was found
on the steps and adopted from there. As she is still living and wants nothing to do with
the knowledge of her true whanau it is making it exceedingly more difficult to accomplish
this task. Any other whakaaro would be appreciated.

Sorry for taking so long in answering your query re. your the name Rukuwai.
My Mothers name Ruku Rukuwai Rukumoana was given from her great-great-great grandmother
of Kahungungu/Tuwharetoa descent who was the common law wife of one William Swainson. I
am not sure if there is any connection to Rukuwai Kamahi (will have to ask my son about
that) but on both my Mother and Fathers side am related to a Theo Rukuwai who is currently
residing in Hamilton.

Keep in touch if you find out anymore. Would like to know more from this side.

Should you be searching for Wehipeihana of Ngati Raukawa ki te tonga. You might like to
try contacting the whanau at Ngati Tukorohe ki Kapiti.
Wehipeihana are a well known family who live in Otaki and Manukau (kuku) on the kapiti
coast. Since you live in Austrialia you may wish to have a look at the marae shown by a
tourist who stayed there recently. Go "Google" search, type in Ngati Tukorehe, have a look.
Unfortunately its not about whakapapa but it will give you a look at where the Whehipeihana
whanau reside.

Finally, I am so sorry in not getting back to you. However I hope this will help you in your
quest. give me your email address and i will send you what i was given by one of the Rapira
whanau from the Wairarapa. I too am looking where the Rapira originated from. I am from the
Hokianga.

born in rawene hospital. My wife is also from the hokianga and her name is Frieda (English
Father) and my three children Raymond Jame 22 Sarah Agnes 20 and Danielle Mataareta 7.
7. My dad was born in Hokianga and his Dad name was Matiu Rapira and his Dad was Hone Piko.
We beleive our greatgrandfather Hone Piko may have come from down the NTH ISLAND. "Still
searching."

So I have just kept to my grandfather Matiu for this moment, who he married Monika (Nika)
Peita of Pungaru and they had 7children, Hemi, Katarina, Atiria, Nere,Riwa,Pio,and Taniere
(Dan)my Dad who married Maatareta Hotere of Matehitehi (Mitimiti) Hoikanga. My Parents had
10boys and nine girls. One of the girls was my eldest sisters daughter who i had the
pleasure of growing up with. We are both 50th this year. She is 5 months older than I. In
Whakapapa she is my neice but to me she is my elder sister. So Bianca you have the name
Rapira and it is a unique name. In the Hokianga the Rapira name is connected to many whanau.
Enough for now and I look forward to you.
