I am trying to trace my whakapapa on my grandfathers side. His name was Jack Pohatu, or
sometimes known as Jack Stone. He married Wawata Rangi from Ngatiporou and settled at
Whareponga in Ruatoria. All I know about my papa before he moved to Ruatoria is that he
came from Muriwai. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

How amazing that yours is the first entry ... posted TODAY. How "tinny" is that???

I am trying to find out about "POHATU" [just one name] .... born about 1700 [before the
pakeha].. probably at "MARORI"... now known as Makarori Beach, just East of Gisborne.

Pohatu lived for a time at Waiotahi PA [near the Waiotahi River Estuary. Later he journeyed
to a PA just North of what is now Eketahuna. He had relatives at all of these places.

I met a Mrs Emery near Eketahuna and she knew who might know. But I've not got back to her.

Pohatu had a strong emotional attachment to Waiotahi .... but my interest is what I think
of as Marori.

Your Jack Pohatu would have been almost half-way between Marori and Waiotahi ... travelling
by whaka .... which would have been the quickest and safest way. [Plus you can catch more
fish in the sea than in the forest].

Aloha Kaua:
According to our family mo'olelo (history) a Maori woman named Susan Hu Parker came to
Hawai'i on a ship (possiblely late 1800's.) She married into the Kauwe 'ohana (a Hawaiian
family) and my great-grandmother is her descendant.

Can anyone please share with me information about the Parker geneaology in New Zealand. It
should be a family with Maori lineage. Maybe my great-great grandmother's name will show-up
as a sibling or lost relative. The name maybe Polynesianized to "Paka."
