Tena koutou katoa,
Ko Otautahi taku kainga anaianei
Ko Marion Munhall ki Hokianga, toku tupuna,
Ko Wade Hill taku ingoa,
No Reira, tena koutou katoa

I am trying to trace the identity of one of my tipuna, Marion Munhall. She is my
Great-great-great-great grandmother and understand that she came from the Hokianga
area.

She married a
Hugh Munhall probably between about 1836 and 1839. I do not know Marion’s maiden

name. I understand Marion is the name that she was baptised with at some stage.
I do not know her birth name. Is it likely that Maria’s baptism may be recorded
in records from a Parish church or mission station in the Hokianga area?

Hugh Munhall was a shipwright and in 1836 he and a William Smith brought land on
the Hokianga River called Punehu, which I understand is on the northern side of
the harbour.

Hugh and Marion had five children:

  Elizabeth (1839-1869)
  Catherine (??)
  Annie (??)
  Maria (1841-1912)
  Robert (??)

Elizabeth (who is my direct descendant), married a
William Brassey at Coromandel in 1861, but were also known to have lived in
Whangape, Mangonui around about 1863-1864. Elizabeth died at Wanganui in 1869.

Annie married someone by the surname of
  Lewisson.
Catherine someone by the name of
  Kelly.

Maria the younger sister, was born in Hokianga, and married a
Michael Baker at Waima in 1860. Maria died in Dargaville in 1912. She was
survived by nine children. I have a lot more information on Maria’s family
and the generations following, which may assist.

We would appreciate any information anybody has or pointers as to where we
might find some more information.

Kia ora ra

Kia ora,

My knowledge of Riperata Kahutia, is found in one of the history books that you
will probably find in any library to do with Early Hawkes Bay or the Gisbourne
area. I cannot recall the title of the book, but there was some extensive
information on Riperata in there.

The knowledge I gained was that she had married
Paratene Turangi. She was also a very wealthy woman and it was written that she
sold land to the crown for a mere 200 pounds, the land of which Gisbourne city
now stands. She also had a daughter
  Heni Materoa whom later became
  Lady Carroll, marrying
  Sir James Carroll.

There is much more information that was written and if I can recall the name of
the book I assure you that I will contact you again, assuming that you have been
unable to locate it yourself.

I hope this bit of information is useful to you, as that is all I can recall at
this time.

Kia ora

May have been a tribal leaders daughter from whom Harris purchased land. Is said

Whakapapa - Te Koroneho Paratene and Te Paea

November 18, 2001, 12:19 am

Kia Ora,

Looking for any information about my Great-great grand parents. Their names from
the Death Certificate are
Te Koro Neho Paratene (Maori of full blood) his wife
Te Paea (Half caste Maori) her last name is not recorded.

Their Iwi or hapu is recorded on the Death Certificate as being
  Mahurehure.

I have no information about Te Koro Neho Paratene and would really love to know
who this person is? Where he was born etc and the
PARATENE whanau who have heard of this man.

I have heaps about my Kuia Te Paea, but would like to find her second whanau to
help me to fill in the missing gaps. She married twice. Her second whanau are
from
Te Arawa - Rotorua. She was a guide for the pink and white terraces and saved
many people during the Tarawera eruption. Apparently the Pakeha books do not
know any information about her first marriage, but do have information on her
second marriage. Is there any whanau from Te Arawa who knew or was told about the
first marriage, especially about any of the kids names. The Kuia name is
Te Paea Hinerangi Gray or Grey.

Any information will be greatly appreciate.

Hi Ron,
my daughter has just shown me the art of "googling" using the google search engine
and I have been busy tapping in at random, so I was stunned to see your e-mail come
up. I don't know how much you know of the family history, but I have a little
information on both sides of the Holmes and Owen family tree. I guess I should
start by asking how much you know of the "Clayton" connection, as depending where
you stand on this you may know more than I do. Through
  James Clayton (my grandfather or
Norman Hawker as he once was) I trace my family back to
  Haumia Te Kaiheraki.

By a funny turn up, I can also trace my family back to the same ancestors on my
mothers side. The Hawker side I beleive came through the Holmes side, my mothers
side (Johnson) came through the Owen side. I have to say my parents were not
impressed when I unearthed this connection!

I would love to hear from you, maybe you can fill in a few blank spaces for me
as well

Cheers

Helen Lenihan

I found your message Interesting, because I have a copy of a oil painting my
sister and I bought in Raetihi about 20 years ago.

The name of the painting was called a few good laughs, It was some time later
that i met a person who was able to give me the full name of this wonderful
cheeky man.

Lets see..... now the painting itself is of a elderly maori male, full faced
tattoo, one shark tooth earring, one pounamu.

A bowler hat, white singlet, blue shirt, and what looks like a green over coat.

If this is your Man, I am sure his full name is TE AHO O TE RANGIWHAREPU.

I hope this is who your looking for, if so, you will be interested to know
that all whakapapa of this person will be available to you.

The Reverend Henare Paraone: (1893 - 1963)

THE REVEREND HENARE PARAONE: (1893 - 1963)
Henare Paraone was born on 4th March, 1893. He was the son of Hohepa Paraone
Ngaruhe and Raiha (nee Awarau). Henare trained for the Sacred Ministry at Te
Raukahikatea College, Gisborne, and was made a deacon on Advent Sunday, 1915.
He was then posted to Waikato. He was priested in 1917 and transferred to
Northern Wairoa for two years. His first sermon in St. Joseph's, was in 1915.
On 26th December, Ko te kauwhau tuatahi tenei a Henare Paraone ki te hahi o
Awanui i muri i tana whakapanga - Hohea 11 : 4.
From 1919 - 1924, he was stationed at Parawai, Thames. He came north to Oruru
from 1924 - 1931 when he began a long ministry at Awanui.

Preaching at a funeral, he said: "In the language of my people, I say that a
constellation has gone into space. The stars are indeed getting scarce in the
Maori firmament. A tree of the forest of Tane has fallen. Haere, e hoa, e Rewi,
as we used to call you in the days of yore.
He Patu na te tangata e taea te kaaro, he Patu na aitua ka ngaro te tangata ka
ngaro te kie.
With the weapons of man, we have equal opportunities, but with the weapons of
the gods, food vanishes and man disappears. The canoe of fate, fashioned out
of the tree of sorrow has taken you away today. You have gone through these
gates that open the one way, and which the canoe returns empty."

Reverend Henare Paraone was presented to Her Majesty the Queen at Waitangi, in 1963.
He died on 19th August, 1963 and 700 strong congregation attended his funeral.
His son, Frederick Brown came back from Denmark.
On 21st April, 1965, Bishop Wiremu Panapa said at the unveiling of the kohatu,
"I would hazard an opinion that if I had received training under a lesser man,
I would not be a Bishop today. That is my tribute to Henare. What distinguished
him from others, was that he was a man with a golden mouth, something that he
used for the whole of his Maori people. He was able to speak to touch men's
hearts, whereas if you heard the same things from another man, you would say,
'that parson was very dry'."

The inscription on the kohatu:

HE TUARI NO NGA MEA NGARO A TE ATUA
HE HEPARA PAI: I WAENGA I NGA RENGARENGA
E WHANGAI ANA I TANA KAHUI
HE URI ARIKI NO NGA HEKE O POHURIHANGA
I TENEI WAKA O KURAHAUPO
'EHARA I AHAU, ENGARI NA TE AROHA NOA O TE ATUA I MAHI ME AHAU'.

His widow Raiha (nee Snowden), died at Waimanoni on Trinity Sunday 17th June,
1973, aged 72. Her unveiling was on 1st June, 1975, with the Rev. D J Urquhart
officiating. The tribal ribbons were pulled by Ihapera Manukau (Ngati Whatua),
Peter Noble (Te Paatu), Reewe Ihaka (Te Aupouri) and Ani Naicovi (Ngati Kahu).
