The Year in Review - 2006

The Preseason:  For thirteen years, the world has wondered, "Is fantasy football about skill, or is it just luck?"  The world watched to see if this was the season that this question would be answered.

We had the draft at Pluckers in Round Rock.  Bob brought his laptop and entered the draft picks on the laptop.  Darrell disregarded the "Madden Curse" and picked last season's MVP first, Shawn Alexander.  That left LaDainian Tomlinson to Mark and Larry Johnson to Emmitt.  LT and Peyton Manning (Mike) were the best first round picks while Carnell Williams (Neil, 8 points) was the worst.  Other bad picks were LaMont Jordan at #17 (Jessie, 2 points), Randy Moss at #26 (Mark, 9 points), and LenDale White at #29 (Emmitt, 0 points).  Great late round picks included Duece McAllister at #134 (Emmitt, 102 points), Drew Brees at #99 (Keith, 75 points), Frank Gore at #82 (Darrell, 108 points), and Baltimore at #77 (Gary, 212 points).  Keith was voted the preseason champ with a big lead over Bobby, Brian, and Mike.  The FurBurgervores were voted the best team name, winning the award for Darrell.  Gary and Mark tied for owner we would like to see win while Danny again won the award for owner we would most like to thump.

The First Half:  Mike started the season 7-1-1, including an 88-40 win over Keith, week 8.  That would win Mike $50 at the end of the season as the most points in a game and the biggest spank of the year.  Keith started 7-2 with his only two losses to his division rival, Mike.  The other guy in the division, Jessie, was 6-4 and hoping all three would make the playoffs as 49 of 52 of the previous 6-4 or better teams had made the playoffs.  Emmitt started 6-1-1 to take the early control of his division.  Bobby started the season 1-9 with his lone victory over Steve.  That is the worst record in league history after 10 games.  Mark started 2-8, including a 82-72 loss to Danny.

The Second Half:  Brian started 7-4 but it was good enough to clinch his sorry division over Mark and Steve, the first of three eliminated along with Bobby.  Mike got the #1 seed at 9-3-1.  Gary started the season 4-4-1, but then poured it on to win his division and the #2 seed at 8-4-1.  The final weekend, Neil and Keith won to get the two wildcards at 8-5, leaving Jessie in the dust at 7-6, only the fourth time in 13 seasons that he had failed to make the playoffs.

The Playoffs:  In the first round, 6th seed Keith spanked 3rd seed Emmitt, 83-41.  Keith had lost his last four playoff games.  Brian beat Neil 57-32 in the other game.  In the second round, top seeded Mike beat Keith for the third time this season, 71-42, and #2 Gary knocked out the defending champ Brian, 56-31.

DangerBowl XIII:  The first seed had now reached nine finals and the second seed had made it to ten in thirteen seasons.  Mike tied Darrell with his fourth DangerBowl appearance and was trying to win his second.  Gary had lost DangerBowl V.  Gary was on a roll, winning has last four, and 9 of 11.  Only one of Gary's first five picks really did really well, Terrell Owens scored 99 points to lead receivers.  His later picks carried him with Michael Vick scoring 126 points and the Ravens leading defenses with 212.  Mike drafted the combo of Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne, with Reggie Bush sandwiched between.  Bush didn't work out, but the other two hooked up for over 300 points.  Mike also got 123 points from Brian Westbrook, a 6th round draft choice.

That week, Gary picked up Ron Dayne from the Texans, who had been dropped the previous week by Mike.  His other starting running back was Maurice Jones-Drew, who Mike had for a while in September.  Each scored 18 points for Gary while the Ravens added 14.  Gary was up 30-16 after 33 minutes, 41-20 after 55 minutes, and 58-29 after the early games.  Each had two players Monday night but it didn't matter.  The final score was 66-43, Gary Vieira Big Belly Doon-Doons over Mike's UnFearless GuineaPigs.  Gary had improved from 8th in 2005 to first to win the DangerBowl and Comeback Owner of the Year.  Gary was the 9th #2 seed to win the title.  With Gary winning, only Mark (13 seasons), Neil (8 seasons), and Emmitt (3 seasons) have not won a championship.

And so the question was finally answered.  Is fantasy football skill or luck?  Definitely luck.

In the loser playoffs, Jessie beat Bobby and Darrell beat Steve to send them to Cannibal Bowl XIII.  The 28-23 win by Jessie was the lowest score to win a game all season.  With an 0-3 start, Steve hoped changing his teamname would save his season.  It worked for a while as he was his next two games.  He didn't hit 50 points again while winning one of his next eleven.  Bobby lost his first six games and both teams had records of 3-12.  Whoever lost would be the second owner with two Loser of the Year Awards.  Steve lost his seventh in-a-row to Bobby, 50-43.

Milestones:  The last five seasons, Mike had won the money for high score week 17.  This season Bobby rebounded and had his best game of the season to win $25 bucks.  Brian won $25 as the Survivor Champion.  Keith led the league in scoring at 953, just ahead of Gary's 951.  This prevented Gary from winning the Triple Crown for winning the championship, best record, and most points.  Darrell had the highest scoring free agent in Tony Romo with 93 points.  Oh the Madden Curse?  It is alive and well as Shaun Alexander missed half the season and scored 72 points for Darrell, the second fewest for the #1 pick.  The second pick, LaDainain Tomlison was the MVP for Mark with 268 points, the most ever by a running back.  This didn't prevent Mark from finishing with the worst record for a team with the MVP at 6-10-1.
