If there was an award for
bad football, then the Harrow Campus B team would surely be contenders -
judging by their performance on Wednesday in the South-Eastern Sports
Association Cup.
In the freezing spring wind
Harrow were drubbed 7 –1 by a Barnsfield College outfit dismissed as
‘rubbish’ by their own manager.
Playing at Westminster’s
sports ground in Chiswick, Harrow were humiliated by lowly Barnsfield who
play in Division Five, one below horrible Harrow.
Barnsfield took the game to
Harrow right from the off, terrorising a fragile defence, demonstrating
discipline at the back and agility up front.
The first half was so
one-sided that it was a surprise that Barnsfield took 33 minutes to score
their first goal – from the boot of Ryan Smith.
Smith went on to score a
hat trick and Jamie Drury, Dean Barnes and Chris Randall also contributed
goals to the 7-1 drubbing.
But Harrow managed to
salvage some pride in the 85th minute with a Jim Leach penalty.
The game ended two minutes
after Barnsfield scored their seventh goal - to the visible relief of the
Harrow team. It could have been worse – Harrow’s last result was a 7
– 0 defeat.
Harrow’s player-manager,
Onslo Rahman, was more complimentary about Barnsfield than his
counterpart. He described his opponents as “fit youngsters”.
One can only hope that
Harrow aspire to be the same, if they want to relive the glory days, when
they beat the likes of Hertfordshire University 15-0. |
