LITTER WARDENS HIT THE STREETS

New litter wardens have hit the streets of Harrow and litter bugs risk £2,500 fines.

Harrow’s two litter wardens are part of Harrow council’s Keep it Clean campaign in Harrow and Wealdstone town centres.

Offenders will have two weeks to pay the £25 fine. If they refuse to pay, the case could go to court and cost them as much as £2,500.

But the wardens have no powers of arrest, and anyone found dropping litter can refuse to give their name and address.

The council’s waste policy manager, Andrew Baker, defended the scheme saying the fines are a last resort. He said: “The sight of the wardens in their bright yellow uniforms should make people think twice before dropping litter and will help make Harrow a cleaner place.”

He added that the wardens will try to trace litter louts by looking through rubbish for names and addresses.
