The student union president criticised Westminster students for their
poor turnout at a tuition fees march.
Only ten people from the University of Westminster joined the 12,000 students
at the march campaigning for the abolition of tuition fees. Some students
travelled from as far as Scotland.
Chris Beany, president of the student union, said: The turnout was
poor. You would have thought more people would have come in support of
a free education.
Its sad that students have become apathetic. The social events
are always sold out. People like to have fun.
"But it was still a disappointing
turnout considering that the event was the first of its kind to take place
on a Wednesday, when students are traditionally free from study and social
commitments."
He added that the poor turnout was worsened because the campuses are situated
around the city and there are a lot of part-time students.
The campaigners wore red shirts, in reflection of the state of their bank
balance. The march, on 20 February, ended in Trafalger Square.
Owain James, President of the National Union of Students, said: We
are running this campaign to stop students from dropping out.
