Westminster University's rugby team have beaten their rivals from University
College Sparsholt 12-5 to qualify for the final of the South Eastern Students
Sports Association Bowl Cup.
Westminster, playing at their
home ground in Chiswick, allowed Sparsholt's forwards to dominate the
scrums and rucks but their own inspiration came from their agile backs.
After 20 minutes, Westminster
finally scored a try through their number eight, which Ali converted.
Much of the game took place in
Sparsholts half, but good defending prevented another Westminster
try until 30 minutes into the second half. Ali went over the line in the
corner but the conversion was missed.
With three minutes to go, Westminster's
scrum half was yellow carded for un-gentlemanly conduct while protesting
an offside.
Sparsholt converted the ensuing penalty but it was too little too late.
Westminster held onto their 12-5 lead despite ten extra minutes of play.
Westminster now face either Christ
Church College or the University of Essex in the final on March 20.
