Panzer General 3D

Panzer General 3D Assault is an overhead view, turn-based strategy series that has earned accolades in the past.  In its latest incarnation it has gone totally 3D!

More involving because it is more realistic, this warfare classic puts tank fights, aerial dive bombs and big time explosions on your computer screen.  Fully animated and very cleanly rendered, you get the feeling that you are observing a real WWII battle from on high enough to make the tanks and even the planes take on a miniaturized look.  When your plane抯 engine bursts into flames that look as if they are being blown back against the cockpit by the wind you realize you are hooked.  Even the terrain, including rivers, forests, the cities and other supporting features are very well detailed, giving Panzer General a good, solid overall look and feel. 

The best thing about this game is how the combat unfolds.  If you have a powerful enough computer, you should definitely leave the animations on, because, not only do they increase the sense of drama many fold, they are very useful in following the ins and outs of the combat itself.  Also, the smoke and flames are great in overview mode for determining how well your units are doing all across the field of battle.
