Garber | |
Garber or "Gerber" is a German surname for a tanner or leather dresser. Some family genealogies claim the area around Basil Switzerland as the origin of the Garber family. While this may indeed be the case, I have not yet verified our Garber origin. The Garbers were early settlers to Frederick County, Maryland where they were members of the Beaver Dam Church of the Brethren. The Brethren were known to their English speaking neighbors as the "Dunkers" or "Dunkards" because they performed baptism by full body immersion or "dunking." Tunken is an old German verb, seldom used today, which meant to dunk. | |
