My Grandfather Owen was a pioneer in the aerospace industry. He served in the Army Air Corps in the early 1920's and then entered private business and worked for a succession of companies over the next 40 years. Flying was one of his obsessions. Another was genealogy. He collected information on family history for over 40 years. I only discovered his interest in family history in 2000, when I discovered that my uncle took possession of my grandfather's records when he died in 1977. My uncle also passed away a few years ago. I finally discovered what was left of my grandfather's work last year. Another uncle did his best to preserve what remained, however, time and physical movement have reduced my grandfather's research to a couple of small boxes. Yet, from what remains, it is clear he stayed in touch with hundreds, if not thousands of relatives. some things in life are truley ironic. For instance, among my grandparents, Owen is the one about whom I knew the least. Yet his story is the one I have had the best luck researching thus far. |
