Search Engines,Entry for November 13, 2007

After taking a closer look at the internet search engine www.yahoo.com, I realized that if I were the webmaster of yahoo.com, as soon as a new potential user would log in to create a new account. The user would then be prompted to complete a short questionnaire about what they as a user would like to be able to do and also take part in. I believe that if any user feels that they had a part in how a site is used or designed that more users would come to that site and then spread the word.

Another change I would do is make the search engine a little more user friendly. What I mean is that give the user the option to filter out what the user is looking for ie. Business sites, blogs, article, org sites, and porn. The reason I bring up porn is that I get really tired of getting search results back that only give a majority of porn websites when I was really just trying to find a site about breeds of cats. I do understand that some of the results that a user gets are from companies that pay for advertisement, however if the user would be able to chose and option to filter, I think it would welcome back even more users.

The third thing I would change to the site would be having more news events that would flash on the main page that having horoscopes or non-important events such as what celebrity did at a certain event that made a certain person mad. Frankly, only a small percentage of people care about that. I think if the main page would show world events both good and bad, state news, even local new depending on where the user would set up there account based off of the home zip code if the user submitted that information.

I do understand that a site like www.yahoo.com is a site that is used around the world, however I feel that a lot of the information that the site offers simply turns many users away. A lot of those users chose to take advantage of www.google.com because of the feasibility of the site. I hope that these words of wisdom might possibly sway a few minds in the higher echelons of the company to change the site to be more user friendly. Best of wishes. Semper Fi. Paul
