I have two newts right now. They are very lucky newts because I just created a viquarium for them! I took a 20 gallon tank and siliconed 2 dividers, one an underwater shelf and the other for the land area. There are many live plants in there for them and I can tell they really love it. For some reason I have always been fascinated by newts. I even wrote a story that had newts as the main characters (when I was a kid:).
Viquarium Inhabitants....
Animals: one Firebelly newt, one Oregon newt
Plants: bacopa, wisteria, dwarf sagitaria, micro sword, arrowhead, java fern, cryptocorn
I have had my Oregon newt (male)for a year now and the Firebelly (female) since December of 2000. They get along good most of the time. A bad thing about newts is that if they are hungry they will not hesitate to grab another newts leg or tail in an attempt to eat them. I don't think they really realize what they are doing, they just see movement and that is mostly how mine find food, aside from smell. The best way to prevent this is to keep them well fed.
I feed my newts everyday or every other day depending, and they get either mealworms, thawed bloodworms, wax worms (when available), small crickets (when I have them), and floating and sinking food sticks.
