SYMPHONY NOVA SCOTIA

Symphony Nova Scotia is a maritime cultural treasure‹the only fully professional symphony orchestra east of Quebec City. Founded in 1983, the mandate of the province¹s largest cultural entity is "to enhance the quality of life of citizens of Nova Scotia and beyond, through high quality, professionally performed orchestral music.² Now entering our 18th Season, the 37 local, national and international musicians who make up symphony Nova Scotia continue to work with the Artistic Team to fulfill this mandate beautifully.

As the cornerstone of classical music in the province, Symphony Nova Scotia offers a wide range of exciting concerts each season‹ magnificent Classics, entertaining Pops, and uplifting Baroque‹as well as a number of special events such as our annual sold-out Beer & Beethoven event each May. The solid reputation of Symphony Nova Scotia attracts prestigious national and international artists who are featured each season as guest performers and conductors.

The activities of Symphony Nova Scotia are guided by the trusteeship of an active board and dedicated management. Artistic excellence and community service are the constant focus of these committed individuals and of the countless volunteers who help with every aspect of the Symphony¹s success.

One of Nova Scotia¹s most visible and active cultural entities, Symphony Nova Scotia is:

1} an award-winning recording group with seven compact discs;
2} nationally recognized through broadcasts on CBC Radio;
3} winner of two East Coast Music Awards for Classical Music;
4} one of the finest and largest pools of music teachers and educators in the community;
5} presenter of over 100 concerts annually for audiences in excess of 60,000;
6} host to more than 10,000 school children annually.

Symphony Nova Scotia recently announced Gregory Burton to the newly created position of Resident Conductor and Simon Streatfield as the Artistic Advisor and Principal Guest Conductor while the orchestra continues its search for a Music Director. Also integral to Symphony Nova Scotia¹s Artistic Team is Alasdair MacLean, Composer-in-Residence; Scott Macmillan, Host Conductor of the Mostly Maritime Series; and Howard Cable, Host Conductor of the Traditional Pop Series.
