X-Men is Australian actor HUGH JACKMAN's first major U.S. screen role. In the film, he portrays Logan/Wolverine, a solitary fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, retractable adamantium claws and an animal-like fury.
Character Description:
Perhaps the fiercest warrior of the X-Men, Wolverine is haunted by a mysterious past. Logan's skeleton seems to be laced with a super-strong metal, which also forms his trademark razor-sharp claws. Extending a foot from beneath his forearms, the claws can seemingly slice through anything. His constant struggle to come to terms with his own feral nature is a sharp reflection of the conflict all mutants face in dealing with their abilities.
Previous Work:
Jackman was last seen on stage as Curly in Trevor Nunn's revival of Oklahoma! at London's West End, for which he received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. The production was also filmed, and received an international Emmy Award in the Performing Arts category. Jackman will begin shooting Animal Husbandry this summer alongside Ashley Judd for director Tony Goldwyn, to be released by Twentieth Century Fox.
His other credits include lead roles in several Australian independent feature films, including Paperback Hero and Erkineville Kings, for which he was nominated for Best Actor by the Australian Film Industry. Jackman has appeared in the Australian television series Corelli and Halifax f.p.
Jackman was named "Australian Star of the Year" for 1999 at the Australian Movie Connection (AMC), which is equivalent to America's ShoWest exhibitor convention. He received the MO Award (Australia's Tony Award) for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in Sunset Boulevard and an MO Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Gaston in Beaty and the Beast.
TV Guide Bio:
Unknown in this country, Australian stage actor Hugh Jackman landed the role of the most coveted of all X-heroes, the one kids imitate and adults tattoo on their arms. “Wolverine is very irreverent and, like Australians, he’s got a healthy disrespect for authority,” says Jackman of the character with special senses and healing powers. Jackman slipped on Wolverine’s claws after actor Dougray Scott, originally cast in the part, was delayed shooting Mission: Impossible 2. Jackman left his mark on Wolverine, who also left a mark on him: “There’s a little scar on my forehead from the claws.”
