Comprehensive Spell List

Comprehensive Spell List--I have tried to create a complete list of spells used in the Harry Potter novels (books 1-4). All spells are listed in alphabetical order with a brief description of what the spell does. Please let me know if I am missing any spells (I'm sure I haven't found them all, but I tried), if I have misspelled any of the words, or if I have described any spell incorrectly...thanks! Get out your wand and have fun with these spells (word to the wise...don't attempt any of the Unforgivable Curses...if you know what I mean!).

Accio—a Summoning Charm (brings objects to you)

Alohomora—a spell that unlocks a locked door

Aparecium—a spell to reveal invisible ink

Avada Kadavra—The Killing Curse (an Unforgivable Curse)

Avis—makes birds burst from your wand following a loud blast like a gun

Crucio—Cruciatus Curse, torture curse (an Unforgivable Curse)

Deletrius—counter-spell for “Prior Incantato”, stops the spell

Densaugeo—a spell to enlarge teeth

Diffindo—can split seams (Harry uses it to split Cedric Diggory’s bag open)

Dissendium—opens the hump of a one-eyed witch into a secret passage at Hogwarts

Engorgio—enlarges the item to which this spell is applied

Ennervate—counter-spell for “Stupefy”, wakes up and unconscious person

Expecto Patronum—summons a patronus which is a positive force that acts as a shield against a dementor and drives it away

Expelliarmus—The Disarming Charm, knocks your opponent’s wand out of their hand

Ferula—creates bandages out of your wand, for mending injuries (Lupin uses this spell to make a splint for Ron’s broken leg)

Finite Incantatum—stops the action of any current spells in action

Furnunculus—a spell used to create boils on your victim

Impedimenta—Impediment Curse, slows and stops something advancing on you temporarily

Imperio—Imperius Curse, puts the victim under total control of the attacker (an Unforgivable Curse)

Impervius—a Water-Repelling Spell

Incendio—spell to start a fire

Locomotor Mortis—Leg-Locker Curse

Lumos—turns a light on at the end of wand

Mobiliarbus—used to move objects around with your wand

Mobilicorpus—used to move an unconscious person

Morsmorde—conjures the appearance of the “Dark Mark” (Voldemort’s calling card, if you will)

Nox—turns off light at the end of wand (counter-spell for “Lumos”)

Obliviate—a Memory Charm (erases memories)

Orchideous—produces a bunch of flowers at the wand tip

Peskipiksi Pesternomi—this spell is supposed to ward off pixies somehow, but the only time we see it used it doesn’t work. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s the wrong spell, or the ding-a-ling who tries to cast it (Lockhart) just doesn’t have enough power to pull it off.

Petrificus Totalus—Full-Body Bind

Point Me—The Four-Point Spell, use this spell while holding a wand flat in your palm and it will point the wand due north, like a compass

Prior Incantato—forces the wand this spell is applied on to reveal the last spell it cast

Quietus—counter-spell for “Sonorus”, brings voice level back to normal

Reducio—shrinks items back to their original size, a counter-spell for “Engorgio”, this spell may perhaps also be used to shrink things from their original size, but that’s just a guess

Reducto—Blasting Curse, used to blast solid objects aside (also called the Reductor Curse)

Relashio—produces sparks from a wand (or boiling jets of water if you are under water), Harry uses this spell as a defense against a grindylow, but I’m not positive that this spell is necessarily an anti-grindylow defense (probably though)

Reparo—repairs broken items, like glass

Rictusempra—Tickling Charm

Riddikulus—a boggart defense spell (should make you laugh, which drives off the boggart)

Serpensortia—creates a large snake out of your wand

Sonorus—amplifies your voice, like a loud speaker

Stupefy—Stunning Spell (renders your victim unconscious)

Tarantallegra—I’m not sure exactly what this spell does, but when Draco Malfoy sets it on Harry, his legs dance around out of his control (a dancing charm, maybe?)

Waddiwasi—I’m not exactly sure what this spell is suppose to do, but Professor Lupin uses it to force a wad of gum up Peeves’s nose

Wingardium Leviosa—a levitating charm
