. . Since being established in 1799 the Woodbury Fire Department has been through its ups and downs, and has made major changes with time and technology. The present day fire department is a combination department utilizing both career and volunteer personnel. There are five (5) career and fifthteen(15) active volunteer firefighters. The city firefighters protect 12,000+ city residents in a 2.4 square mile area as well as many neighboring communities. Woodbury consists mainly of one and two family residentials but also hosts a wide veriety of mid rise residential and commercial structures, light industrial occupancies, and with Woodbury being the county seat there are many government and judicial buildings throughout too. The city is also home to 5 schools, two (2) conrail right of ways and rail yard, a branch off of the Delaware River (Woodbury Creek), and a hospital with the busiest emergency room in South Jersey. On average the department runs approx. 600 calls per year.

Saturday 7/10/04 the District along with the Ladder Co. from 7-3(Westville) were dispatched to cover nieghboring Station 6-2(Verga) due to a working fire at the Sunoco Oil Refinery. While enroute to the cover, County Radio advised 511, 731, and 736 to respond to 437 E. Penn Blvd on the cities east side for a kitchen fire. Upon arrival of 511, the crew found there to be a small kitchen fire due to unattended cooking. The fire was extinguished and after overhauling the wall and ventilating, the companies went available. At this time the Sunoco fire had gone 2 alarms and County Radio advised us to proceed into that job also. This fire would eventually go to 6 alarms, while crews operated well into the night. Firefighters returned back to quarters around midnight releaving the cover companies from Magnolia, Barrington, and W. Collingswood Heights.
City firefighters were back at it again Monday morning when the career crew was dispatched to the CVS store on E. Red Bank Ave for a vehicle fire. The engine arrived to find a passenger vehicle well involved with exposures. The crew streached 1 1-3/4 line and made quick work of the fire controling it with in minutes.
