Novocane Novocane are an innovative Cambridge-based DJ collective, for whom the art of music is very much an art. They have come to challenge the staid basis of much DJ performance, based as it is around defined music al boundaries, repetitivity and an unwillingness to experiment. Their music is a floating mix of beats and sounds which refuses to be defined, the closest definition being that of 'chilled out/alternative beats'. The standard DJ equipment of two decks and a mixer has been dispensed with in favour of an 8-track mixer, two decks, three CD players, a TV, and two microphones. The latter feed their live element, a violin player and a didg/percussionist, which gives them a whole extra dimension. Although inexperienced as DJs, it is their willingness to experiment with ideas and evolve new sounds that is their greatest asset. Influences are varied and tend to merge drum'n'bass, hip hop, techno and dub rhythms with Indian, African, Celtic and classical sounds in an endless melange of immensely diverse hybrids. Their musicians too are very skillful and much of their live work is simply jamming, which means that rarely is the same mix of sounds reproduced. The exception is their putting down of an original live CD, an attempt to capture their diversity in an atmospheric and dynamic album, 'The Rites of Novocane', which is available to order in our shop now.
