Paul Mulwitz - the "Penmaker"

Welcome to Paul the Penmaker's Page.

Paul lives near the top of a mountain in Southwest Washington state - about an hour drive from Portland, Oregon (and about a half hour from the nearest grocery store). He lives there with his wife, Jan, his dog, Shep, and two cats.

After too many years as a digital design engineer making stuff for the big companies to mass produce, he "Retired". Unfortunately, he "Doesn't do nothing well" so he started making stuff in his workshop. Along the way he started making wood pens from exotic hardwood and found that he really enjoyed making them. He also discovered that the pens he made were among the best in the world, and he could get other people to pay for his supplies by selling the pens. That is a really good deal for everyone!.

He makes just one pen per day. The woods he uses are so beautiful, he would never consider changing their natural colors with dyes or stains. His finishing technique takes a lot of effort, but it produces a great appearance. He has developed special techniques for fitting the wood and metal parts together which leave experienced critics just staring at the resulting pen wondering how it was made.

His first design, the "Comfort" pen, is shaped to fit into any human's hand. It is hard to believe that the big pen companies don't use this shape, but it might be difficult to mass produce. It has a matching pencil and a pendant version which the ladies have been known to fight over. Take a look at Paul's Comfort Pen Page.

It didn't take long for Paul's customers to start asking for fountain pens. After a number of requests, he started making them using the "Parker" style from the 1920's. They became a real hit. That line now has a .7 mm pencil, a roller ball, and a Multiple-Choice pen which uses "Cross Selectip (R)" refills. The fountain pens are Paul's best seller these days. Take a look at Paul's Fountain Pen Page.

Another bunch of customers started asking for special nibs for the fountain pens. One finally got him to try modifying the standard nib into a left-oblique caligraphy nib. Paul discovered that regrinding nibs is a lot easier than anyone had said and now makes the left-oblique nib for anyone who is willing to try it. Those who have one love them. (Paul himself doesn't use anything else any more.)

Paul loves to hear from his customers and anyone who wants to chat via email. He entertains custom design requests and often makes things nobody knew could be done. Send Paul an email.

He guarantees his pens for virtually all problems forever. This includes materials and workmanship like other folks guarantee, and extends to things like "I don't like it" (which has never happened) or "It got run over by a tank and broke" (which has not happened - yet) or anything else a customer thinks is worth sending the pen back for.

Paul's Most Famous Customer.

Senator Don Benton presents one of Paul's fountain pens to Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the House of Representatives. Photo taken in Vancouver, Washington on October 28, 1998.

Newt's smile tells the whole story about the pen!
