Annual Second Grade Restaurant

Each year the second grade classes at Union City Elementary School hold their annual second grade restaurant experience. Each class invites one of the other second grade classes to eat at their restaurant. The restaurant experience began about 20 years ago to go along with the career education portion of the curriculum. Through this experience students learn about the various jobs that are involved in a real working restauant. First the students choose a name for their restaurant. Then they plan a menu for their patrons to choose from, which consists of a main dish, vegetable, dessert, and beverage. (A bake sale is held prior to the restaurant to earn the money needed to buy the food and paper products that are needed for the restaurant.) The menus are then made by the students. Students must then apply for the job that they would like to have at the restaurant. Once the jobs are assigned, students are instructed on what they need to do in order to perform their job and time is given to them so that they can practice their jobs. Finally, the big day comes and a good time is had by everyone.

Students Apply for Restaurant Jobs

One of the most important things that the second grade students need to do is apply for the job that they want at the restaurant. There are six different jobs that they can apply for. Those jobs are: host/hostess, waiter/waitress, cook, busboy/busgirl, dishwasher, and janitor. Two hosts and hostesses are chosen, along with six waiters and waitresses, five or six cooks, three busboys and busgirls, two or three dishwashers, and one janitor. Of course, the number for each group depends on the size of the class holding the restaurant. Students are directed to apply for two jobs--their first and second choices. They are asked why they would be good at the job they want and also if they have had any experience at the job. Positions are filled accordingly.

Kids Rule

Mrs. O'Reilly's 2000-2001 class entertained Mrs. Dahlinger's class at their restaurant on May 23, 2001. They named their restaurant "Kids Rule" and served their customers tacos and nachos, carrots and celery with dip, ants-on-a-log (celery stuffed with peanut butter and raisins), ice cream sundaes and root beer floats, along with milk and Kool-Aid to drink. Several students from Mrs. Dahlinger's class complemented the students in Mrs. O'Reilly's class on what a great time they had at the restaurant.
