Using the Spirits

When it comes to good and evil, naturally there exist but two different spirits: the Holy Spirit and the unholy spirit. For all who follow Christ, God sent the Holy Spirit in Jesus name (John 14:26). Furthermore, God created helpers in the form of angels who are ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation (Hebrews1:14). It would follow then that any spirit mentioned in the Bible other than whatever has to do with the Holy Spirit is of the unholy spirit: Satan. As the prince of this world, Satan rules over his recruits (evil angels, demons or spirits) who fell with him in the rebellion against God.

To see Satan and his followers at work, look to Luke 13:11 to see how he used a spirit of infirmity to cause a woman to walk bent over for 18 years. Upon seeing her, Jesus commanded the evil spirit to depart, immediately curing her. Jesus ordered an evil spirit out of many others (See Mark 1:23; 7:25), and a deaf and mute spirit (See Mark 7:31) out of yet one more man. One of the most astounding accounts (Mark 5:3-17) speaks of a man with many evil spirits (some 2000) who were likewise ordered out.

In 1 Samuel 28:7 Saul sought a woman with a familiar spirit (a spirit he wanted to use), known as the witch of Endor. He had wanted Samuel the prophet brought up from the dead.to learn of his future. Via this means of witchcraft Saul learned that his death was imminent. Even today, a Christian can no more dabble in the black arts than could God's people in the Old Testament, though some do at great risk. Indeed a "true" Christian cannot serve the Holy Spirit and the unholy spirit simultaneously, as no one can serve two masters (Matthew 6:24). One lesson is learned about what Satan or his evil spirits can do in Luke 22:3. What happened is that Satan entered Judas, and the rest is Bible history.

A specific group of Christians, on one hand, might condemn people not serving Christ for using spirits to handle cards for purposes of fortune telling, to call upon spirits other than the Holy Spirit in new age games and so forth. On many occasions, however, these same Christians -- whether they realize it or not -- may be using unholy spirits themselves. In so using these spirits, these persons call upon and use the enemy's agents. Read on.

Oftentimes a Christian may know someone who has a spirit of gossip dominating his/her life. While Proverbs 20:19 says, "A gossip betrays a confidence..." these so-called Christians -- from leadership to the pious (?) in the pews -- knowingly use that spirit to transmit the content of their schemes to others. For instance, when some know that, say, Bobby Sue carries stories from one person to another, they use that spirit to carry trash to places their feigned holiness would not otherwise transport it themselves. In essence, they give themselves over to the practice of evil. Face it, using the spirits of the enemy is tantamount to seeking mastery in that form of witchcraft. No child of God can sleep with the devil at night and walk with the Lord in the day.
