Tainted Water
Reports of late in national newspapers douse us
sleeping Canadians with icy truth regarding the critical state of our water
supply. A once vast land of pristine
pools which sparkled in the eyes of international fishermen, approximates a
thermometer in some areas if only because of an elevated mercury content in
some rivers and lakes. On the other
hand, other water bodies become but viaducts for raw sewerage pumped downriver to the next town for purification and
consumption. Human beings represent the
only creatures on earth who knkowingly dare to wade in, dive into and / or swim
in a fluid that is no longer just H20. Soon it will truly be "...water, water
everywhere, but nary a drop to drink."
While we may think gasoline is expensive, water
sells for more per liter. Jesus had
much to say about our water, even before it reached its current state. No matter how much a person might drink, in
John 4:13 Jesus says, "Everyone who
drinks this water will be thirsty again..." Our earthly water can sustain life for a time, but Jesus says
that only he can give us "living
water" (John 4:10). In his own
words, Jesus says, "...the water I
give him will become in him / her a spring of water welling up to eternal life"
(John 7:37). Our daily drinking water
may momentarily slake our thirst, whereas, the water that Christ provides will
keep those who drink it for an eternity.
Who can drink this water? In
John 7:37 Jesus says, "If anyone is
thirsty, let him come to me and drink."
He also says, "...whoever
drinks the water I give him will never thirst."
No matter where we go,
oftentimes, we do not give the slightest regard to the water which we
drink. Of late, however, people are
heeding warnings, but the same is not true for spiritual people who are
likewise faced with a tainted water crisis.
Even though Revelations 21:6
Jesus says, "To hm who is thirsty I
will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of
life," countless people who
have a Christ-sized void in their lives invariably end up drinking a poisoned
spiritual water. As filters endeavor to
sift contaminants from our waters, certain quasi-Christian groups use filters
to sift Jesus from their spiritual water.
Jesus says in John 7:38, "Whoever
believes in me...streams of living water will flow from within him." Without Christ in the spiritual water,
there will be no "living
water." In any era, much
spiritual water had always contained its toxic level of its soul cyanide, but
even moreso now with new age brain-warping come-ons. Know what's in the the
proverbial water glass before you dare to imbibe.
Ephesians 5:25 says that Christ gave himself up for the church, "...to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word..." It may be time not only for a drink of the "living water," but a bath in that same water. Jesus says in Revelation 22:17, "Whoever is thirsty...let him take the free gift of the water of life." Draw your water from the wells of salvation (Isaiah 12:3).
