Business Plan

"A business plan is a formal statement of a set of business goals, the reasons why they are believed attainable, and the plan for reaching those goals. It may also contain background information about the organization or team attempting to reach those goals.

The business goals being attempted may be for-profit or non-profit. For-profit business plans typically focus on financial goals. Non-profit and government agency business plans tend to focus on service goals.

Business plans may also target changes in perception and branding by the customer, client, tax-payer, or larger community. A business plan that has changes in perception and branding as its primary goals is called a marketing plan."

Why you should Develop a Business Plan

by: Charisse Van Horn

Define your Vision

Inspiration and creativity may be the main forces that drive your business, however without a well laid plan, even the best dreams can fail to succeed.  Creating a business plan is a tangible way that you can see your vision and goals and map out a strategy that will allow you to attain your dreams.  Your business plan should begin with your mission statement.  This may be as simple as one sentence, or it may be an in-depth declaration of the nature and purpose of your business.  Your business plan needs to begin with your vision, because it is very common for many new business owners to become so overwhelmed with the day to day functions, responsibilities, and nature of the business that they ultimately lose sight of their main goals and objectives.

Define your Product or Service

After you define your vision and create your mission statement, you will need to take an assessment of your product or services.  This includes studying

  • The company's origins.
  • The product or service and its uniqueness or competitive advantage.
  • The company's goals.
  • The market potential for the product or service.
  • A three- to five-year summary of key financial forecasts, especially sales and profit/loss. For new businesses, do some market research and make realistic assumptions about how your business can compete.
  • The management team and its track record.
  • The financing required to grow the business.
  • The exit strategy.
